Hi Cecil
The memorial re the Principal Edward Soares Memorial Committee (sic) caught
my eye. It is well argued for by you and I hope it will receive wide
support. However, I well knew another Edward Soares who studied in Goa and
then Bombay and then taught in Kenya including becoming a school Principal.
He was often simply referred to as Principal Edward Soares. I can't recall
his next initial but suspect it could have been J too. He died in December
2004 in London. To avoid the possibility of error on virtually an identical
name, I'd like to suggest that the initial J becomes very important and if
there were an additional one it could help too.
Just a thought.

Principal Edward J. Soares Memorial Fund
In 1923 Edward J. Soares founded the St. Thomas School in Aldona which has
since grown into one of the finest educational complexes in Goa. Principal
Edward Soares was an enlightened educationist, disciplinarian,
nationalist, humanitarian and most importantly a visionary. His
farsightedness and perseverance through the trying initial years till his
demise in 1955, laid the foundation for this institution from which all of
us have benefitted. Not just Aldonkars but families from neighbouring
villages too, for whom those many decades ago the St. Thomas School was
the only opportunity for a decent education. Over the years the alumni of
St. Thomas School have earned laurels and distinctions in various fields -
not just in India but worldwide. Many generations owe much to this pioneer
son of Aldona.
To pay a fitting tribute to this great man a Principal Edward J. Soares
Memorial Fund has been instituted. The money from this fund will be
utilised to:
1) Install a bronze life-size statue of Principal Edward Soares on the
anniversary of his birthday on 9th December 2006 at the central triangle
in Aldona.
2) Establish a Memorial Lecture which will be held annually on 9th
December.
3) Institute Scholarships in memory of Principal Edward Soares in St.
Thomas Boys School and Higher Secondary as well as St. Thomas Girls
School, Aldona.
4) Commission a portrait of Principal Edward Soares to be presented to the
St. Thomas Boys School.
5) Compile a series of articles on Principal Edward Soares which, along
with photographs, will be printed in a souvenir format and released at the
time of installation of the statue.
For all these, and other related memorial activities, a sum of Rs.
10,00,000/- (Rupees ten lakhs) has been targeted. An Executive Committee
of ex-students of St. Thomas Boys School consisting of Sylvester D'Souza,
Braulio Botelho, Shantaram Naik, Nick Figueiredo, Sanjith Rodrigues, Cecil
Pinto and Savio Figueiredo has been appointed to co-ordinate the fund
raising and commemoration activities. The management of the St. Thomas
Boys School, the Fabrica of the St. Thomas Church, local Government
authorities and the family of late Edward Soares have also been involved
and have committed full cooperation.
Our request to you, Aldonkars, ex-students and well-wishers, is to donate
generously towards this fund so we can expeditiously start the process of
celebrating and commemorating this great man's life and achievements. Let
Principal Edward Soares' character stand as a beacon for future
generations to admire and emulate.
