NEW DELHI: Roque Dias, a former Goa's Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, was on Thursday promoted as the full-fledged director of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) under the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. He had gone on deputation to the Goa Government early ninties after becoming a deputy director in SAI. Roque, who is in his early forties, has been looking after for the past one year equipment imports and indigenous purchases at the SAI headquarters here. Among the first winners of the national youth awards launched by then Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi in 1985, has been a qualified badminton coach and represented Goa from 1975 to 1982 in the badminton nationals. After working with the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala, for one-and-a-half years as the badminton coach, Roque joined SAI in 1987. Among the key posts held by him in SAI were as administrator of almost all stadia in the capital and conducted various international competitions including world shooting championship, Indira Gandhi gold cup hockey and the Test matches.
