PANJIM, January 29, 2006: As part of the centenary celebrations of the arrival of the salesians in India the Konkan vice-province launched on 20th January a mobile school. The first of its kind in Goa. The Mobile Bus was blessed by Fr Loddy Pires ( Provincial) at the Provincial House Odxel. A brief explanation of the venture was given to the friends and benefactors who were present. At 4.30 p.m. there was the formal inauguration of the mobile school at Kareband, near Margao. The chief guest was our friend and benefactor Mr Alvaro Da'Costa and his wife Celsa Da'Costa. The Mobile school is an initiative of the Govt. of Goa in collaboration with Don Bosco, to take education to the door step of the poor and the marginalized of Goa. It aims at targeting the children who have missed out on school, of the age group 5-14 yrs. The Bus is the school and has basic infrastructure. It moves from place to place imparting education. At each stop a group of 20 students are recruited and a two hour session of class is held daily at the same spot. So far we have identified three areas for the implementation of this programme. Children are graded according to their performance and an examination is held at the end of the scholastic year with a government certification, enabling them to join the regular schools around their vicinity. This is the first step to make it possible for each and every child to attend school. We are happy to implement this scheme of the Government, which is truly in keeping with the mind of Don Bosco.
