RESPONSE: The shortened version is fine except for the word ali which
should read as alay (with) Salaam alay kum (Peace be with you).

I am not a convert but having lived in the Gulf region for a long time, I
am
familiar with some of the common greetings. The correct greeting is:
"As-Salaamu Alaykum" - not "Salaam ali kum"; the reply: "Walaikum Salaam",
or "Walaikum Salaam Rahmatullaahi Wa Barakaatuh" (more formal).

RESPONSE: Thanks for that! I lived and worked in both Jeddah and
Riyadh and very few people went through the formality....I am using
the shortened version, as I prefer it; this style of greeting is
widely used in the Coastal areas of East Africa, which had a strong
connection with Omani Arabs. Also non Arab Muslims use this
abbreviated style. Incidentally I was born and raised up in Nairobi,
Kenya.
