From: George Pinto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

<The argument against the Navy at Dabolim, is not an argument against the Navy in Goa, hence the phrase "for those who keep insisting that the Navy has no *strategic* role to play from Goa" is a
red herring and straw man.

Additionally, the Navy's refusal to let a few worshippers at a Church once a year on a Feast day, brings the Navy's supposed defense of freedom and democracy into question.

Exactly whose freedom and democracy is it defending if citizens cannot exercise their
constitutional rights? >

Dear George,

Well said.

Interesting how those who claim to defend "freedom and democracy" deny "freedom and democracy" to the very people they claim to be "liberating".

I suggest that the Indian Navy let All n Sundry know as it is i.e.

1: Forget Dabolim or Anjediva, Goa is the "spoils of war". We an do as we please with it. What will you Goans do to us? OR

2: Dabolim is strategically important to the defence of India. We know it is a civilian airport. Let us come to some suitable understanding where the Indian Navy will provide this, in return for the use of Dabolim, and Goa's civilian airport can go ahead with this. AND

3. OK, there is a church at Anjediv. You guys need it for a few days a year ....Unless there is a war or a threat of war ...Let us come to some arrangement.

Unfortunately Geoge, I don't see 2 or 3 happening - not only in Goa but also anywhere else in the world. The armed forces are "jusht like that". That is why they have made arrangements in Delhi NOT to let the Army to close to Parliament. A civilian (President) is made the Commander in Chief.

There is also a quid pro quo in all this. Let them do what they want out there ...as long as they don't come close to Parliament. The politicians in Pakistan are morons. They don't learn.

Think about it. Are conflicts always necessary ...or are they often provoked? Is there Big Money in Arms procurement? Is there Feni in Goa?

It's all about Power ani Poixe, dear George.

Freedom and Democracy, my foot!

There is the story of this Powerful Step-Father ... who used to beat up the child ... to teach him discipline, steal from his piggy-bank ....to teach him fiscal responsibility, and prevent him from using the living room .....to protect him from the proverbial "boogie man".

I'd say this to Phillip and Gabriel: You are making logical and sensible arguments. But this is not about Logic or Sense. Those are (as George Pinto rightly notes) red herrings.

Its all about Power and Poixe.

Goans can do what they want. Ain't nothing will change.

Spoils of War ....don't have a say ...unless they repeat HMV.

jc

PS: do remeber this ...anytime you use the word "Liberation".
