BJP morcha figures in Assembly
Panaji | February 15, 2006 6:40:56 PM IST

Sufferings of commuters and padestrians due to yesterday's rally by
the BJP at Mandovi Bridge on the Mumbai-Goa National Highway figured
in the Assembly today resulting in heated exchange of words between
the treasury and the opposition benches.

The issue was raised by Mr Jitendra Deshprabhu (Cong) during the zero
hour censuring the BJP, holding it responsible for the suffering. He
even sought arrest of the partymen involved in the blockade of the two
bridges on the national highway.

He pointed out how the earlier BJP government, headed by Manohar
Parrikar, had arrested Congress workers for holding peaceful rallies
without disrupting normal life. The same BJP yesterday held people to
ransom for several hours by holding the rally in the city While
appreciating the exercise of democratic right of the parties to
conduct rallies, Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane said such rallies
should not result in suffering of thousands of people.

Mr Parrikar, however, said the party held the rally after obtaining
proper permission and blamed the police for the bad management of the
situation as a result of barricading the entry points of the bridges.

With tempers running high, Speaker Francisco Sardinha intervened and
expunged some remarks made in the House from either side.
