Dumping of wastes: Margao citizens request local authorities to intervene NT News Service Margao Feb 14: Taking cognizance of the nuisance allegedly caused by dumping of wastes and other garbage in open places at some important places in Margao citizens have requested the local authorities to intervene and abate the nuisance. According to the citizens from Housing Board, Gogal, Aquem, wastes and other garbage is seen dumped at the entrance of the some of the buildings and sometimes it remains uncleared. They have alleged that because of the accumulation of garbage and stagnation of filthy water, a foul offensive smell greets the person who visits the areas. As per the citizens they could be exposed to serious health hazards as the entire areas are filled with parasitic flies and the stagnant water provides a breeding place for the parasites. Citizens alleged that it is unfortunate that the competent authorities, including the municipality, have not taken any steps to clear the waste and the accumulation of filth, though such filth is seen even at the approach road of the some parts of margao . Some months back residents of Fatorda had drawn the attention of the authorities to the health hazard caused by the accumulation of sewage water and other wastes in the open drain at the four road junction, near Nehru Stadium, Fatorda. Later health officer of Margao health center has issued notices to the hotels from Fatorda asking them to take necessary steps to ensure that no nuisance is caused to the citizens regarding accumulation of sewerage waste water and other waste in the public drain at four road junction. According to the residents open drain in some parts of the city is causing serious inconvenience to the residents as open drain and the accumulation of the filth results in a foul and offensive smell. They alleged that some drain which are lying in the market area provides a breeding place for mosquitoes and other dangerous parasites. Sources in Margao Municipal council (MMC) however said that regular garbage is lifted and areas are kept clean. It was said that some drains have been repaired and all steps have been taken to keep areas clean.
