Nagao parish priest killed in road mishap NT News Service Mapusa Feb 18: The parish priest of the Holy Trinity church, Nagao (Bardez), Fr Joao Vincent Gonsalves was killed in a fatal accident at Sangolda today afternoon. Fr Gonsalves, aged about 60-years, was proceeding towards Porvorim on his Hero Honda Splendour motorcycle when a Maruti van (GA-01 R-0649) coming in the opposite direction crashed against his motorcycle and subsequently dashed against a Maruti Zen car and a Vespa scooter injuring several people. The tragedy occurred around 4 p.m. today. According to Calangute police, Fr Gonsalves suffered severe injuries and his right leg was smashed. He died while being shifted to the Goa Medical College, Bambolim. The Maruti van driver, 23-year old Siddiqui Hullal Tojari from New Vaddem, Vasco, told police that his bus was broken down on the Calangute-Vagator road and he was taking a mechanic to repair it. When he reached Sangolda, a Yamaha motorcycle suddenly came in his path and to avoid it, he veered his van to the right thereby crashing into Fr Gonsalves and the other vehicles. While Calangute police had no information about the whereabouts of the occupants of the Maruti Zen, the Vespa scooter rider, 40-year old Mr Robert Menezes from Saligao was admitted to the Goa Medical College and was believed to be out of danger. The Calangute police have charged the van driver, Tojari for causing death due to rash and negligent driving. -- Peace be with you! Ani borem mog khor! Gabe Menezes. London, England Comment: The carnage on Goa's roads continue. A few weeks ago my cousin was being taken by a tourist taxi from Margao to Candolim. The driver crashed into a lamp post. Both my cousin and his wife were taken to GMC hospital and then to a hospital in St. Inez; onwards to Lilavati hospital in Bandra. He died Saturday morning; his vertebrae was crushed and he suffered spinal injuries. His wife's legs were fractured and she will need to remain in hospital for sometime. Hopefully she will recover. The speeding driver walked away with minor scratches and bumps. I trust the authorities in Goa will also charge this driver with reckless driving.
