Mopa Airport will destroy State economy: Churchill BY HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, FEB 19 - MP Churchill Alemao has demanded to know whether the present high spending tourists who stay at 5-stars in South Goa will continue to come to Goa if they have to undertake a two-hour drive to a hotel from the airport.
Reacting to a article published by U D Kamat in a section of a press, Alemao said if it will take two-hour journey from Mopa to South Goa, all the hotels will surely be affected and will mostly likely close down, destroying Goa's economy. "We will destroy Goa's economy if we build Mopa and help create competition by developing the beaches and economy of Maharashtra. The impact of this on Goa has yet to be seen", he added. Alemao said if Mopa is required for other than tourism industry, let an expert show whether there's any need for a bigger airport. According to him, projection of tourist traffic will certainly if a bird flu or Sars epidemic is reported in Goa. "South Goa earns 75 per cent of taxes from tourism which helps to run the economy", he added. ~(^^)~ Avelino
