Goan identity showcased at Margao floats
BY HERALD CORRESPONDENT

MARGAO, FEB 26 - The uniqueness of Goan identity was amply demonstrated
here this evening as hundreds of Carnival revellers from all walks of
life thronged to the city to witness colourful parade of floats which
wended their way through the city streets and culminated at the Margao
Municipal square.

The Chief Guest Dr.Wilfred D'Souza was seen seated on the dais at least
45 minutes earlier before the floats began to arrive at around 5.30.p.m.
at the Municipal square.

Attired in varied colours and dresses, the spectators lustily cheered
the floats which depicted various scenes of Goan lifestyles such as
paddy cultivation, sugarcane plantations, fishing activities, transport
system etc.

Young girls and boys danced to the tune of lovely music while the young
and the old sprayed powder in the traditional Goan style, some men were
seen dressed in the women's attire, which created a real carnival mood.
While floats such as the "Goencho San Joan", "Save Goa", "Goenche
Karvi", depicted various phases of Goan lifestyle, there were commercial
and individual floats too that made their appearance today. A total
number of 82 floats participated, thus giving a big response to the
Margao Carnival Committee.
Among those on the dais were MLA Banu Azgaoncar, Damu Naik, MMC
Chairperson Piedade Noronha and the MMC Councillors. The Margao Police
headed by Police Inspector Santosh Dessai, under the supervision of
Dy.SP Tony Fernandes and overall supervision of SP Shekar Prabhudessai
performed well in making the occasion a grand success.
