Writers contribute richly towards social transformation: Jamir NT Staff Reporter
Panaji March 3: The Governor, Mr S C Jamir, today said that a writer is not only a magician of words but a visionary who actively contributes to the society. Mr Jamir, who earlier released Spice & Sugar, a collection of assorted articles by the noted Goan writer and columnist, George Menezes, at a city hotel, said that in todays age of great transformation, the writers contribute richly towards social and cultural transformation of the society as well as the well-being of the people. Speaking further, the Governor observed that the 58 article pieces in the book by Mr Menezes are humorous, adding, it is easy to make fun of others and create humour but difficult to place oneself at the centre of humour. Mr Menezes, in a frank and fearless manner, has admitted his shortcomings to create humour, he pointed out. The book also has a human touch and displays highly sensitive nature of the author as regards the incidents taking place around him, Mr Jamir said. Mr Menezes, speaking on the occasion said that his heart was so full that words were coming to him with much difficulty. I am giving back Goa what I have received, he acknowledged. Mr Menezes also remarked that unless one loves people, he cannot be effective. The writer further opined that people should go back to the reading habit. Mr R Prasad, the Dean of the ICFAI National College, which had organised the book release function said that Spice & Sugar is the combination of humour and human situations, common to the social values. Ms Maria Aurora Couto, Ms Anju Timblo and Mr Vivek Menezes read out the excerpts from the book for the audience. ~(^^)~ Avelino
