When Churchill said yes to Mopa airport! BY HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, MARCH 3 — In a counter offensive, Industries Minister Luizinho Faleiro has said that it was MP Churchill Alemao who congratulated the Union government on the floor of Goa Assembly for the Centre's decision to have two airports in Goa. Producing Alemao's speech in the House at a news conference, Faleiro claimed that Alemao had then said that it was fine to have two airports in Goa. "Why is he doing a volte-face now after openly saying that he has no problem if there are two airports", Faleiro demanded to know. In fact, the industries minister said that Alemao spoke in the House on April 3, 2000 congratulating the Union government even after the Union Cabinet took a "deadly" decision on March 29, 2000 to close down Dabolim airport upon commissioning of the Mopa airport. Commenting on Alemao's decision to circulate his letter dated October 22, 1999 and holding him responsible for the Mopa airport, Faleiro shot back "I was not the CM in 1997 and 1998 when meetings were held to discuss the Mopa airport." On the contrary, Faleiro said he had on October 22, 1999 had asked the Union Civil Aviation Secretary Ravindra Gupta to take action on the 5-point agenda, which he had prepared as a road map to make Dabolim as the international airport of country. -- TUMCHER AXIRVAD ASSUM; DEV BOREM KORUM.
