            Mr. Eduardo Faleiro former Union Minister was appointed, recently  
as Commissioner  for  Non – Resident  Indians  by  the  Government  of  Goa. 
Mr. Faleiro  has  been  given  the  rank  of  a  Cabinet Minister and shall  
function  from  the  chamber  adjoining  the  office  of  the  Chief Minister  
at  the  new  Secretariat  in  Porvorim.  Mr. Faleiro  will  look  after  the  
interests  of  Goans  settled  abroad  and  will  co-ordinate  with  the  
Government  of  India  and  Indian  Embassies wherever  there   is   a   
substantial  Goan  population.

            Soon  after  taking  over,  Mr. Faleiro  held  a  meeting  with  
the  officers  of  the  State  Administration  and  of  the  Union  
Government  to  identify  the  matters   to  be  taken  up  by  the  
Commission   on  priority  basis. Among  the  subjects   so  identified   are  
the   following : removal  of  four  weeks  restriction  on  Goan  NRIs   
using  chartered flights ; problems  faced  by  Goans seeking employment 
overseas particularly  those  who require  emigration  clearance ;  protection 
of   land  holdings  and   properties of  Goan  NRIs ;  awareness  of  
cultural  roots  and  of  the diverse  Goan  cultural  streams.
