All morality is based on empathy. It can be inculcated into one's emotional intelligence without the dogma of religion. For those unwilling to invest the time and effort to educate themselves, there will always be 'learned' theologists to lead the way. Unfortunately, Slavoj Zizek is misinformed and the quoted portion of his letter is typical of the arguments used by those who have been brainwashed into submission. It did nothing to convince me of the validity of a divine source of morality. However, you shouldn't feel ashamed of your devotion to a supernatural power. Coincidently, there was another article by a person called Slavoj Zizek who wrote" Atheism is a legacy worth fighting for" on International Herald Tribune Paris edition. What caught my attention was not this article but a letter written by a person called Jacob Smith from Puerto Rico in reference to the article "Atheism is a legacy worth fighting for". I will reproduce the letter for those who think they are atheist. Slavoj Zizek "Atheism is a legacy worth fighting for" makes a flawed assumption when he states that atheists do good deeds "simply because it is the right thing to do". What he fails to grasp is that the concept of a "right" things to do presupposes a universal standard Any attempt to arrive at an idea of "right" and "wrong" independent of an outside or divine source is destined to collapse upon itself. "Moral" atheists do nothing but borrow wholesale from the codes of those they look down on and have not even the courtesy or intellectual consistency to acknowledge the source material for their value judgement.
