Yours and Gabe's info is correct re the visa for a Portuguese citizen resident in the UK. The only point I'd add is that getting through to the American Embassy/Consulate can be quite trying at times on the phone. This was my own experience when I needed to ascertain my own status for a trip recently as I wasn't taking chances with the immigration officers on landing. But I did find their email service on this issue quite helpful. However, I should like to take this opportunity to say how much I enjoyed the Commonwealth Games which came from your lovely city Melbourne. Therefore, a big thank you to you and all for the lovely Games.

Hi,
Does someone with Portguese citizenship and a

in the UK require a visa to enter the USA on a
holiday?
Thanks

Hi Helga,

Portugal is one of the coutries that enjoys what the
US call a Visa Waiver Program, but see below.

"Foreign nationals who wish to visit the United States
for leisure or tourism are normally eligible to
receive B-2 visas. B-2 tourist visas are required for
citizens of countries that are not included in the
Visa Waiver Program. However, citizens of countries
included in the Visa Waiver Program may also be
required to obtain a B-2 visa if they plan to stay in
the United States for longer than 90 days or change
status to other immigration categories after entering
the country. Persons admitted to the United States
under a B-2 visa are not allowed to work or receive
any kind of payment while staying in the United
States."

However, to keep your mind at rest, contact the US
Embassy at:

United States Embassy
24 Grosvenor Square
London W1A 1AE

Call 09042-450100 Monday through Friday, between 8.00
am and 8.00 pm, and Saturday, between 09.00 am and
4.00 pm.

The service is not available on British public
holidays. Calls to this line are charged at £1.20/min
from BT landlines. Some mobile and network providers
may charge more.
