The new Hyderabad International airport is slated to take off in the first quarter of 2008, with a long-term vision to handle over 40 million passengers. Its 4260 metre-long runway, one of the longest in the country, and the airport will have the capacity to handle a traffic of 7 million passengers a year, up from 4 million at present, as soon as it launches. Spread over an area of 5400 acres, the airport project will cost Rs 1760 crore in the first phase. Growing traffic The project is a joint venture company promoted by the GMR group, with Malaysia Airports and the state and the Central governments as co-promoters. The GMR group has bagged the rights to develop the Delhi airport as well. The promoters project the traffic to grow up to 20 million passengers every year in the next decade, which will necessitate a second passenger terminal. "The growth rates in excess of 20 per cent are easily sustainable. As a private airport owner, we are going to drive this business and provide partnership synergies to the airlines," said T Srinagesh, COO, Hyderabad International Airport. The project promises to deliver a dream airport that will offer a never-before flying experience. An airport village will cater to the passengers' relatives and friends so they don't have to wait outside the airport.
