Goa cops between 40-45 yrs suffering from serious ailments Panaji: One-fourth of Goa policemen between 40 to 45 years are suffering from serious ailments, including psychological problems, according to a recent medical check-up of the personnel.
Of the 373 policemen between 40 to 45 years who went through complete medical check-up, 85 are suffering from ailments like diabetic mellitus and hypertension, Police Medical Officer Kalpana Mahatme told PTI here. "The amount of stress is very high in police personnel and Goa Police is no exception to it," said Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ujwal Mishra. The 3,700-strong force polices 14 lakh population of the coastal state besides 20 lakh tourists annually. This makes an average of one policeman for 400 people. The ageing police personnel are not able to cope up with the increasing job pressures, Mahatme said adding they need psycho-therapy and humane touch. "Instead of just giving orders, the police station in-charge should work towards understanding his sub-ordinates' psychology," she added.
