An easier method is the "two-second gap". Whatever
speed you're going, count the number of seconds
between when the car in front of you passes a
stationary object (telegraph pole / mango tree) and
when you cross that object (mutter slowly one-thousand
and one, one-thousand and two) - if the count is less
than 2 secs, you're too close to the vehicle in front
of you.

i.e. use the same gear you would require to climb the
ghat, to descend it.
