Domnic Fernandes continues (Part III) his reminiscence of Mapusa of the 1950s http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=426 ------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Jose
Surely, the vast majority of Indians who have emigrated in recent years and still do, have done so on Indian passports ...... The proportion who migrated with Portuguguese passports would be miniscule.

I really wonder if you have misunderstood me about the point I made re using an Indian passport to leave India to work abroad if necessary. I have myself come across so many Indians recently, who have obtained work permits to work in London. They tend to have specific expertise, often in business and IT, which is not to be found among the newly incorporated EU citizens from Eastern Europe many of whom apart from dentists and doctors, tend to be the much needed proverbial new plumbers and bricklayers and sales staff in the big stores.

Mogal Cornel,

I will assume that we are still on the topic at hand i.e. Advantages of a Portuguese Travel document

If we are, then we are (i believe) thinking about the Goans, and the former residents (and their descendants) of the erstwhile Estado da India Portuguesa (EIP).

Their numbers will indeed be "miniscule" when compared to the Billion plus population on the Subcontinent. No need for Chi Square to determine that (:-)

The question before us is : Is it EASIER for Goans (and other former EIP citizens) to enter, travel or work in (say the UK) when compared to equally qualified (or unqualified) Indian passport holders.

The question (I asumme) is NOT about the past, but about 2006.

Yesterday, I posted a link to an article dealing with EU legal protections afforded to " EU workers" [Portuguese Citizenship for eligible Goans - Hopes, misconceptions, and what EU Law provides - TGF. at http://www.colaco.net/ ]

I agree entirely with you about HOW Indian Passport holders have (at least, in the past) made their way up - through sheer hard work et al.

The question before us (if I may repeat) is about 2006. ... and the new Work-Visa Regulations for the UK. Please vide infra.

Among other individuals, it will definitely affect Indian Passport(only) Holding Doctors who apply for "Higher Training" jobs; NOT the EU passport holders.

good wishes as always

Migration: How points would work: 7 March 2006

PRESENT SYSTEM
Depending on the type of worker you are, your entry into the UK is controlled by one type of permission or another, even though the government sees each in its own way as contributing
to the economy.

HOW THE SYSTEM WILL CHANGE
All the different work permits and entry schemes will be replaced by a single points-based system, the aim being to only allow entry to those whose skills will benefit the UK.

European Union workers will NOT be affected - they and a few other European countries will still be able to come and go under the free market rules that allow British people to move to the continent.
