==================
Alto-Malim:
It took Mananda Sawant eight long years to received her first bundle of joy,
but it
took fate a few horrid seconds to snatch both her sons away from her forever.
A pall of gloom descended over the hamlet of little houses at Alto-Malim, a
hillock
little away from the river Mandovi. Scores of people lined the street leading
to the
Sawant household waiting for the bodies of the two young lads, Dipltesh and
Diraj,
to arrive.
Barely 24 hours earlier, the ambience was of festivity and joy. The villagers
were
awaiting the arrival of a new 'Palkhi' for their deity Vithoba Ramkhunt.
As the 'palkhi' reached Malim, it was taken in a grand procession to nearby
shrines
and places of wroship.
The ill-fated car, in which they were travelling in, was laden with
firecrackers and
so it was decided that it would travel at the end of the convoy.
Villagers recount that as the lit firecrackers were being tossed out of the
window,
a spark entered the cart and immediately ignited the firecrackers stored in it.
The
seat caught fire and the by-standers recount that the driver, his daughters and
the
deceased boys'father Datta escaped.
People say that Diptesh and Dheeraj could have escaped too, if only they had
opened
the car door. "However, they were young, scared and not used to travelling in a
car, inorder to know how to open the door" a villager said.
+++++++++++++++++++
Poor young lads, how much they must have gone through, screaming and shouting in
side the van and may have got time only to say just three words 'Ayee' 'Dada'
'Deva' just before the death took them away.
Lord, please take those angles into your arms and give enough courage to their
Mother to bear this all.

The temple on Monday morning was empty as crowds gathered at the Sawant
residence.
The sounds of women wailing could be heard from a distance. "You'll went, but
you'll
did bit take me. I never went with you" the deceased boys' mother, Mananda
wailed.
With her, at her place, were nearly 30 women giving her solace in her time of
grief.
She is alone as her husband, Datta along with other injured relatives were at
the
Goa Medical College Hospital, Bambolim.
When the bodies arrived in the afternoon, even the men folk who gathered
outside the
house were in tears.
Diptesh was STD VII student at People's High School and Dhiraj a Std V student
at
Progress High School.
