Actor Aamir Khan is very unfairly facing the
unwarranted wrath for having within his rights
candidly expressed the need of rehabilitating those
displaced by the Narmada Dam in keeping with the
Supreme Court directives.
Freedom of speech and expression is a hallmark of
living in a democracy but as is increasingly seen
today, it does not come without a price.
Over the last three decades in student and social
activism I have seen it for myself by having to bear
the brunt in standing for the truth.
In pursuing issues in public interest one gets
systematically hounded by fabricated charges but there
has to be an irreversible resolve to stand firm.
Today to be successful one has to be a sweet talker
and a "polishing" writer. Something that has never
appealed to me as I firmly believe that one has to be
ready to speak one's mind and write fearlessly. A
path I hope I will never have to deviate from,
regardless of the price to be paid.
In standing up for the truth one faces a threat to
life as well as an orchestrated character
assassination drive by your detractors and
enemies you will have collected for being blunt.
Over the years I have endeavoured to take up issues
which many have not dared touch. With no intentions to
contest elections or becoming rich, I have never had
to cave in to threats or dampen the fighting spirit.
