A happy easter to you. I had meant to respond to your post on the net re
Goa's appalling road sense. I was struck by your observation regarding the
driving test in Goa. Having also gone through 'the British and Goan versions
,I can only share your dismay.'
A few more observations that I need to share
The driving test for two wheelers just tests the agility/ability of the
driver to do a figure of eight without the rider having to put his or her
foot down. There is no place for testing the driver on meeting traffic etc.I
feel this has produced a whole population of riders who feel it is wrong/
unmanly to slow down/stop once the bike is in motion. It is OK therefore to
weave/swerve and come under the wheels of a Kadamba as long as one does not
place ones foot down.
The second point is on giving way. This is specially noticed at the round
abouts/traffic islands. Traffic from Ribander/ Panaji just sweeps into the
roundabout forcing traffic on the round about to back up and stop.
International convention dictates that traffic from the right gets
preference but in Goa the bigger vehicle gets the right of way or is it
preference for the traffic from the left?It gets very confusing.
Goa did have traffic lights especially on the old Patto bridge when it was a
two way and at the junction near the Police HQ. Needless to say the frequent
power outages and the Goan penchant for speed and apalling road sense forced
the authorities to have the RTO man these traffic lights. They are now part
of the street furniture courtesy CCP.Karnataka has solar powered traffic
lights manned by traffic constables. Margao has the main traffic island
manned by police!!
