Press Report

Last Bus to Vasco: Poems form Goa a debut collection of 50 poems by Goan
traveller-poet Brian Mendonça was released on Easter Sunday, 16 April 2006 in
the elegant environs of The Regency, at Hotel La Paz Gardens, Vasco, Goa.

Releasing the book, Mr Menino Peres, Director, Department of Information and
Publicity, Government of Goa, spoke about how he came in touch with the poet
through sheer chance --. through his officials travelling on the 2779 Goa
Express to Delhi for the trade fair and who happened to spy Brian scribbling
his poems.

Brian in his address thanked Mr Peres for sponsoring a back cover ad to help
meet expenses.

Kevin Mendonça, introduced the guests on the dais and thanked Mr Alex George
Mendonça the father of the poet and the host of the evening for making
possible the tasteful venue for the evening.

Daniel de Souza compered the programme in his scintillating manner and
observed that the meticulous tracking of Brian's academic career offered by
Professor AK Joshi retired Head of Department of English, Goa University,
provided a 70 mm glimpse into Brian's life. Prof. Joshi saw Brian as an
adventurist who moved from Goa after his MA in English, to Pune for his MPhil,
later to Hyderabad for his PhD and finally to Delhi for a job. He said that
Last Bus to Vasco is a gathering of poems ranging from the reflective, the
scenic, the autobiographical and the travelogue. The audio CD enhances the
experience of the poem.

Professor Newman Fernandes, Principal of St Xaviers College, Mapusa, who
taught Brian during Brian's college years, said that all of us are born poets,
but end up being prosaic, for want of time and application. Poetry was the art
of saying things pithily. He hoped more young people took to poetry. In a
gallant gesture he announced that St Xavier's College would be happy to
sponsor Brian's next book of verse.

Fr Nascimento Mascarenhas thanked Brian for writing a poem on the bells of St
Andrew's church, Vasco. He said he had often noticed Brian's shy smile and
keen observation of people and things.

Speaking with conviction, the poet said that the volume of poems asserts that
Goans have a literary heritage they are proud of – besides singing and
dancing. The volume is a slice of life, a poetic history of Goa which melds
both the private and the public. Reciting his poem 'Fugitive' in Portuguese,
he said all of us are fugitives, trying to discover our own truth – or
sometimes running away from it a banner.

Lourenço Fernandes whose dazzling photograph graces the cover of the book was
also present recording the events.

Valerie Rodrigues froze the special moments of the evening on her camera. Mr
Alex Mendonça thanked all present for making it an evening to remember.

In particular Karen Lobo and Kini Lobo who produced a banner for the evening
in the twinkling of an eye to provide the backdrop for the dais.
