Mogall Goanetters, One of the oldest Goan professions is 'Khobramkar'...meaning gossip monger. I don't mean to offend anyone but I' m suprised that the so called 'Khobramkar' still exist in modern Goa.. One can find them in the Goan Balcao's, fish market, bars and other places where they try to pass their time at others’ cost.
A lot of Goan homes have been destroyed because of these gossip mongers, they will eat and drink with you and then stab you in the back. In tiatr; they can be seen as 'mauxi'. (aunt) or "maam" (mother's brother)even a bachelor neighbour playing the role of a villain. On the face you see them always smiling but their minds are full of dirty ideas. 'Kaddiecho dongor korop'...(making a mountain out of a molehill) they destroy those who try to come up in life or try to help others...I'm sure many of you must have come across such type of people. I remember an incident during the invasion of Iraq, when Saddam’s retreating forces had put fire to the oil wells in Kuwait...there were such khobramkars in Goa who spread rumor that Kuwait and Saudi Arabia were burning. When I called home, my mom was worried as someone had told her that they had seen on TV… Saudi Arabia burning. Years back a similar 'khobramkar' had spread a rumour that 'Lorna' was no more. After she came to know of the news...she sang this song "Aik re Khobramkara'..below are some verses of that song. Borea bhaxen aikat hi ghodleli ghoddni (pls listen to this incident) Konnank ixttak moji nirddukai choddli (a friend of mine got jealous of my success) Dukhest ghoddnin eka vorsan hi ghoddli ( this sad thing happened in one year) Aum melem mhunn sogleak khobor poddli ( news spread that I passed away) Chintlear hem dista mhaka ek umannem ( I think this is like a puzzle) Aum melem mhunn focot takach sanglem konnem (who told him that I was dead) Kiteak osli khobor zait ghatli tannem ( why did he spread such type of rumour) Dev bhogxi taka, tho gineanan unnem ( may God forgive him ‘cause he is brainless) Further she goes on advising the 'Khobramkar' Devan sanglam ek dis ujeacho ietolo varo (God said one day the world will be on fire) Soglo sonvsar fuim zatalo churo ( the whole world will perish) Aik re khobramkara tum zai nakai bhero (Listen gossip-monger, don’t be deaf) Sounsarant tum ekloch urlear puro ( May you live alone in this world) Kednach katorchi nhoi re, val thi choddti (Never try to cut the budding creeper) Devachea mukar diumchi poddteli zoddti ( You will have to face judgement before God) Dusreachem padd galpachem hem borem noi nodti (Never try to spoil others future, is not a good thing) Chodd borem bik mag, chodd borem bik mag, chodd borem bik mag athant gheun kotti (It’s better you go begging....with coconut shell.) Late Alfred Rose also sang a song 'Gozali'...as how people talk in amchem Goa, his advice to the others: Khobro korteleamchi porva korunk favonam ( one should not bother about the gossip-mongers) Bonkta poi tea sunneak kednanch kan diunk upkaronam (should not listen to the barking dog) Tancher sintid dorxi tor amchi kamam zaumchinam (if we listen to them then we willl not be able to do our work) Fuimchem mazor imsann soddit punn teo gozaleo sodchinam (a cat may give up eating fish remnants but will not give up gossip mongering) Recently another singer George Coelho in his Album Ieo Moga Ieo sang this song..."Khobramkara" he says... Dekun hem kantar aikon mojem, khobramkara tum motin dovor (this song is for you khobramkara keep in mind) tujem pott bhorchemnam, vo sorgar pauchenam lokacheo khobro korit thor ( u will not fill your tummy, or u will not be in heaven if u gossip about others.) focot tujeach patkamchi zoddti, tum dhi sounsaran assot sor (repent for your sins in this world, till you are there) Dusreachem bore tujean pollovunk zaina tor tuje dolle bond kor (if you can’t see good of others then close your eyes) My advice to the 'khobramkar'...Undrachea Ragan Gharak uzo ghalinaka..( do not burn the house for the sake of a rat). Dev borem korum Edward Verdes Chinchinim/Jeddah PS: Full Lyrics of the songs available on request. _____________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
