My dear Bernardo,
Veterinarians are real people, they can feel the pain those silent animals
have and treat them to the best of their ability. This is quite a feat
believe me!! As you may be aware that if you had a health problem you would
be able to waltz into the doctor's clinic and tell him where your pain was
etc. Can an animal do that? Sure some of them communicate with their owners
in a certain way but not enough to be be able to tell the owner that "I have
a severe headache on the left hand side"
If it was not for the veterinarians one would probably be eating choricos
(sp) filled with cancerous meat and not the real thing. I have lived in Goa
and before I became a veterinarian, inspired by James Herriot at that, I had
no idea what to expect in Bombay Veterinary College.
As for myself, I did not feel disgusted at having to manually rake out dung.
What I did feel sad about was that our college did not have the money to
provide us with long enough gloves to do the job, maybe they had the money
or whatever. I will never know.
Vets are real people and I recall suturing a dog that had it's paws cut
badly with broken glass on the day my daughter was born. No such luxury of
sitting around waiting like a ' full term about to pop pregnant woman. I did
not complain.
On X'mas day whilst most were probably eating pilau and sorpotel, I would be
in some field fixing some mastitic goats/ pigs with maggoted wounds etc with
flies galore and I did not complain. Point I am trying to make is that that
"why should what vets do be considered offensive/ obnoxious? About time
people were educated about the real things in life.
If you happen to know a vet wherever you are, ask them to take you along
when theres a case of ' a retained placenta' you will definetly have a lot
more respect for veterinarians and what they do then. Take care

Hi Bernardo,
Thanks for enlightening us on why you thought the clip was obnoxious.
Yes,
veterinary medicine does entail some highly disgusting procedures
(neutering is a polite way of referring to the barbaric practice of
physically castrating virile males - a necessary evil for pets and
domestic
animals ;-)
I remember my surprise (and disgusted) at being told, at my interview with
the Dept. of Veterinary Services and Animal Husbandry in Panjim prior to
being accepted at the Bombay Veterinary College, that as part of my
training, I would have to manually rake out dung from a cow's (or for that
matter, buffalo's) rectum to make place for my arm... up to my shoulder!
That is an essential part of checking the reproductive status of the
female
bovine.
Obviously not for the uninitiated but eye-opening for the public (and the
cow ;-)!

Gooday Dr. de Saligao,
Contacto Goa is a cultural program. Since the first episode displayed on
RTPi and with the exception of bharat political correctness (like they say
here in india blah, blah) the CG series has shown a lot of Goan talent in
the cultural front.
Now suddenly in the current epsiode (first of the three parts in the
program) they show a vet sticking his hand 1 meter deep in a cow's bum,
and
more bum sticking with thermo is not very cultural. IM HO it is OK for
this
kind of 'shots' to be shown on an animal program or vet education.
BTW who am I? Only my opinion! I am not against vets!

I think it is a Portuguese series on Goa. Maybe Ross or Bernardo can
enlighten us. It was posted on GoaNet.
Kevin
ps. Bernardo, I will forward your reply to this list of Goan
veterinarians.

The current episode of Contacto Goa was of poor quality. The depiction of
a
veterinary doctor going about his work was utterly repelling. Shame on
the
CG and RTP for the broadcast.
