Konkani Show in Kuwait - Konkan Talents Kuwait.

On their 5th anniversary, KONKAN TALENTS KUWAIT organized their Konkani entertainment programme “DARBAR – 2006” on Friday 28th April 2006 at Hawally A/C Hall, starting at 5.15 p.m. The show consisted of songs, comedy jokes and skit besides dance performances. Out of three dance items, the one choreographed by Kiran Sequeira and Rakesh Martis with the background Mangalorean Konkani song Juliana deserves highest praises. It was very much liked by the entire audience and fabulously applauded. For the other two similar items, the background music was from Hindi Films. Amongst the songs, the solo rendered by Joyline Gonsalves deserves compliments as she rendered it with full clarity and confidence which many other artistes lacked. Ivan Sequeira one of the visiting artistes coming from Mangalore and who was introduced to Konkani Stage by Wilfy Remimbus rendered his songs with mellifluent voice but much of the contents of his songs were failed to reach greater part of the audience due to faulty Mike system. Because of the defective Mike system, many of the songs were not clearly understood and hence they lost their charm before they could reach the ears of the audience. Jokes were performed by Me-Mo-Ri coming from Dubai while excellent compeer from Dubai Manohar Pais did excellent justice to his job. To make this show more entertaining artistes from Dubai & Mangalore were brought including the Lead Guitarist Alwyn Fernandes who has the unique distinction of being the first Mangalorean to play in the Hindi Films. Besides him the musical score was also provided by the well known musicians Monawar who mesmerized the audience by playing Tabla, Dalak and Tumba, Roney on Electronics Drums, Jackson Base Guitar, Joyson and Melwyn on Key Boards. Though the musicians played well yet the music that they played was not meant for such shows because for our shows people likes to listen carefully to the words of the songs. The loud and hi - fi music played that day was meant for ballroom dance, it created lot of disturbance in the hall for the audience ears. The surprise of the whole show was the dance performed on Hindi Film Tune by a 4 year old girl Baby Wanesa Pinto. Lawry Pinto as an incharge of the organizing committee welcomed the gathering and thanked everyone for cooperating with the organisers to stage this show. As I have been watching him from close angle, he is always encouraging for the Konkani cause. The Skit "Aang Bizlear Masli Melta" was performed well by John Suratkal and the troupe. As a whole the show was not too good, it lacked many of the attributes to make it admirable. It would have been nice if any of the prominent Goan stage artistes had been inducted in this show as Goans does for Mangaloreans and in this case it would be a nice integration of Konkani people. After all is it not a show of Konkan Talents Kuwait? Konkan talents is not inhabited amongst Mangaloreans only, it is spread all over Konkani region including Goa.

During this show, two Konknni promoters from Dubai were felicitated, one Eddie Netto from Daiji Dubai and the other Walter Nandalike – Editor in chief of Daijiworld.com. Fr. Melwyn – The newly crowned Pe. Vigar of Kuwait Church was also felicitated by the organizers for completing 10 years of his priesthood.

During the interval, I had an opportunity to exchange few words with Walter Nandalike who with his Daiji campaign along with Eddie Netto is spreading the message of Konkani. They are doing this only thru Kannada Script Konkani and as such they are concentrating into only one pocket of Konkani that is of Mangaloreans. When I questioned Walter of his opinion on the on going controversy between Romi and Nagri script Konknni in Goa, he admitted that Romi should be given due recognition. When I further asked “why you are deserting Romi Konknni in your campaign? Aren’t Romivadis your Daijis?” He had no clear answer. Even in Kuwait Church Romi Konkani is very much slashed from the liturgical readings and this was seen more strategically when our Kuwait Church was PeVigarised under Fr. Melwyn. If this trend goes on unarrested, Roman script Konkani Catholics will suffer a lot from the Konkani scriptic apartheid as it is practiced now. Earlier Catholics were inconvenienced due to the Sancristianisation of the Church though the effect of it is becoming less now but arrogance of PeVigarisation is becoming more visible and in the matter of language discrimination it is seen the most. According to me in our Church both the Konkani scripts should move parallelly without any discrimination seen or done. Roman script Konkani Catholics are the early Catholics in Kuwait and they have served the Church very well before the arrival of tin pot discriminators whose hatred and arrogance towards others is not good. No doubt Konkani does not belong to Romivadis only but neither it is the monopoly of non-Roman script promoters and followers. And as a matter of interest, what Roman script Konkani Catholics have done for the cause of Konkani as a whole and for Kuwait Church in particular none others have done. Even the Goan Carmelites in Goa and elsewhere have contributed in this.
