Seems like the standard Navy fare. A justification for heightened military expenditure? --FN

Dr Singh was quite at home on the vessel getting a first-hand experience of how men in white fare at sea. One who rules the sea is all powerful. Friday's demonstration of naval capabilities was spectacular to say the least which sent out a signal that the Indian navy was strong enough not only to protect its own coast, but also the entire Indian Ocean for promoting India's economic interests to make it a thriving economy. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh witnessed a series of manoeuvre and exercises with keen interest and also spent his night on INS Virat which is simply majestic as the name itself suggests. This only aircraft carrier of the Indian navy carries Sea Harrier fighter aircraft, Sea King, and Chetak helicopters. Sea Harrier is a mind-boggling aircraft, which needs a runway 400 feet only to take off and land, fly the helicopter without any runway. The firing of rocket was another eye-catcher. Rockets are fired by ships to carry out attacks on the submarine once it is detected. The perfect show of how surface-to-surface missiles are destroyed proved how efficiently the Indian navy carries outs its operations. INS Virat sails for three months continuously at the speed of 28 nauts. So, a fleet of ships follows it to replenish materials. Talking to newsmen on Saturday [6 May], Chief of Navy Adm Arun Prakash said that Indian navy has an operational career from the east coast of Africa to Malacca Strait and so it needs more ships for which private sector's participation may be invited, but only in extreme necessity a ship would be imported. Addressing the sailors on Saturday, Dr Manmohan Singh said that India would soon have another aircraft carrier Vikramaditya. Admiral Gorshkov, after modification, will be commissioned as Vikramaditya. He also told newsmen that navy can contribute a lot to the growth of India's trade. _____________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
