HEAR, HEAR!! I have a lump in my throat, reading Mr. Marcos Gomes Catao' REMINISCENCES OF MAPUSA IN THE 1930s AND 1940s.
I lived for a few years in Salcette Goa, aroung the late 60's and early 70's and although life was a-changing even then, what with the last of the kashtis and the topless rice cultivators, the candle in the coconut lantern, the rationing of kerosene, rice. I shall never forget so many of the situations so eloquently described by Mr Catao. The funeral procession band; the "cocottes" at Carnival, the village drunk and the village idiot, not necessarily the same person; the flea-bitten dogs, the skinny pigs rushing to the out-house ( petrified we were). AND RELIGION. Catholics to the core, I beleive. But then, CANADA was heaven when I first came here. Wide Open front doors; Free and kindly government services; Today, it is a jungle of two-legged anmals; government officials totally greedy, unscrupulous, and liars and cheats. SO, fret for what will be, not what has been! ----------------------------------------------------------------- Read all Goanet messages at: http://www.goanet.org/archive.php?name=News&list=goanet ----- End forwarded message ----- _____________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
