---------------------------------------------------------------- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre (GDRC) Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] --------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------- Govt sets in motion expressway marking ----------------------------------------------------- The government appears firm on the 6-lane expressway connecting Canacona and Pernem, with the PWD NH-17 setting in motion the preliminary process of marking the alignment.
Colourful boards showing alignments of the proposed expressway have sprung up in South Goa, on roadside in the villages of Assolna, Chinchinim, Balli etc. In fact, PWD officials have fanned out to the villages to supervise erection of the boards, considered a first step towards finalising the alignment. Incidentally, the expressway is proposed through areas falling within 200 mts to 1-2 kms away, west of the existing national highway No 17. Take Chinchinim for instance. The existing NH-17 passes through Dandeavaddo area, but if one goes by the board erected at Sucaldem, the expressway will pass through Deussua and join Sucaldem near a shrimp farm, before joining Assolna in Banda and Adi-Banda in Cuncolim. Incidentally, the road passing through Deussua and Sucaldem falls in khazan land, while at other places the alignment is mooted through the low-lying paddy fields. At Balli, the expressway alignment is located 800 mts on the Balli -Fatorpa road, PWD officials said, adding the alignment passes through Sinquetim-Navelim and the Utorda road junction. When contacted, PWD Executive Engineer, NH-17 Gurav said the erection of the boards on the proposed expressway alignment is just a preliminary exercise. "The PWD will work out a feasible alignment only after a thorough study. Nothing is final", he said. Gurav said the PWD will undertake a study on the alignment on the technical, economical and feasibility aspects of the propose alignment. "We will study whether the alignment will affect human habitation, and whether it requires any changes", adding that the government will invite suggestions and objections from the public before finalising the alignment. The expressway had come in for strong criticism from some quarters in Salcete, on grounds that the project would affect human habitation on a large scale. ------------------------------------ HERALD 17/06/06 page 1 ----------------------------------- ======================================= GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy ======================================= -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
