Dear Elizabeth,

I read your post with a great deal of appreciation. Well said.

What's with these "men" and their chauvinistic views?

It is the women who cannot do this or that.

It is the women who MUST bring dowry .....and more dowry (or get burnt)

It is the women who must become Devadasis

It is the women who must commit Sati

It is the ('lower caste') women who must bare their breasts when the Lords of the 'upper caste' pass along their path.

It is the women must stay at home and cook for their "devata" husbands

It is the women who must tolerate her husband's other wives in her home.

It is the female fetuses(and newborns) who end up getting killed

Recently, the No 2 chap in the Indian Army said that the Indian Armed forces can well do without its women officers. He continued by stating that '“Ideally, we would like to have gentlemen officers and not lady officers...” “.... comfort levels with lady officers are low. We can do without them.”

Can you imagine that? All this because the Men officers have been harassing and making unwanted sexual advances towards the women leading to bad publicity for the force?

And do read his pitiful excuse for an apology :

"Should my remarks have caused any anguish or doubt about my personal commitment and healthy respect towards the role of lady officers, I have no hesitation in rendering an apology to such groups or sections of society or individuals."

This fella must be fired for his bigotry towards women. But will he be, in the land of Chauvan and Chauvinism? Highly unlikely.

National Geographic Today reported (2002) that More than a third of WOMEN in Kenya between the ages of 15 and 49 have been subjected to some form of genital circumcision.

As recent as Jan 1981, some senior religious authorities were commanding their followers not listen to medical authorities because the latter often change their minds. Parents must do their duty and have their daughters circumcised.

The same authorities are quoted as saying that " female circumcision is desirable because it curbs "nature" (i.e. sexual drive among women)."
