Dear Fred, Doubtless there are many valid and urgent issues that plague women than school uniforms. However sometimes, the smaller issues are tell-tale signs of pressing problems in our society.
For instance I find the commercials for Fair& Lovely cream revolting. There is one where a young woman goes on to become a sports-news presenter only after she becomes "fair and lovely". Are we telling our women that if you happen to be dark, then you are doomed to making chapattis and pickling mangos? How come being dark never kept a man from achieving anything in life? Perhaps on the face of it, this issue seems trivial but self-esteem is a very important aspect of a woman's life. Financial independence and self-esteem are integral is resolving a host of problems that plague women; be it leaving husbands that batter them on account of alcoholism or fighting the glass ceiling at the work-place or even standing up to the patriarchal make-up of our society. Our polity can make rules that affect the well-being of women no doubt, but real change will come about when our families and our teachers are equipped to inculcate a sense of confidence, equality and self-worth and value in our women.
