Dear Mario, This is what is wrong with your premise. That it is unrealistic and because it does not take into account the realities of human nature, it fails.
Abstinence, might have been a great virtue when the average marriage age was around 16. It's not difficult to abstain for a few adolescent years - under threat of brimstone and fire (although from what my mum tells me there were quite a few incidents in those days too). The average age today (even in metropolitan India and definitely in progressive Goa) is 25-27 for women and 28-29 for men. Now try telling men that they have to abstain from sex through what are undeniably their peak years. At least we women can safely wait for 40 to arrive :)) The other reason your premise fails, is to assume there is any sort of "monogamy" in marriage. Statistics simply don't support this. Men and women are cheating, either openly or discreetly. So your advocacy for abstinence as a way to protect oneself from STDs and unplanned pregnancy is one in futility or as Cecil might say "pissing in the wind". I rather people having sex be secular humanist wearing condoms rather than devout Catholics not wearing them. Now please don't interpret this post to mean my husband and I are leading some sort of hedonistic lifestyle and polluting the "boondocks of rural America" as you call it.
