mailing list (the moderator, actually) has this interesting
announcement about a seminar on Indian Ocean cultures coming up this
week.
Called Indian Ocean: Cultures in Contact, the event is introduced
thus: "The Indian Ocean has attracted migration from the Malays,
Chinese, Indians, Arabs and Africans, and is also the area where
Europe and USA came into contact with Africa, the Middle East and the
Orient. This seminar aims to stimulate scholarly debate and discussion
on cultures in this region." It's going to be held on July 14, 2006
from 2 to 6 pm, at the Menzies Room, Institute of Commonwealth
Studies, 28 Russell Square, London.
Some themes of particular relevance: 2.40-3.00 pm The Western Indian
Ocean through Chinese Eyes by Clifford Pereira (Fellow of the Royal
Geographical Society & BASA) ... 5.00-5.20 pm Goan Folk Music and
Dance by Anthony Noronha (Composer, Conductor & Oboist) and Joao
Paulo Cota (Musician & Conductor, Goan Music Society, UK).<p>
