I applaud the Maharashtra Chief secretary - a Keralite Mr. DK Sankaran for having the courage to turn down the Kerala Government's offer of help for the Malayali victims of the Mumbai bomb blasts.

In turning down the offer from the Kerala government, Mr. Sankaran is quoted as saying, "We do not differentiate between communities and have offered the best possible help to all the victims."

Mr. Sankaran should be nominated for "Man of the Year". We need such exemplary non-communal attitudes in our leaders and citizens to boost India's Unity in Diversity.

Best Regards,

Carmo

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has turned down an offer of help from the Kerala government which offered assistance to only Malayalam-speaking people affected by the killer blasts of July 11.

Soon after the blasts, the Kerala chief secretary, Mohammed Riasuddin wrote a letter to the Maharashtra chief secretary D K Sankaran about offering help. The Kerala government had also sent an officer to Mumbai to assist Malayali blast victims.

But Sankaran, who is himself a Keralite, turned down the request. He told TOI on Saturday, "We do not differentiate between communities and have offered the best possible help to all the victims.

The state turned down the offer of help from the Kerala government since it was only for people from Kerala who were affected by the blasts. We have given equal help to all and the state is capable of looking after every affected victim."

Bureaucrats in the state government were quite upset that the Kerala government chose to discriminate between victims. "Does it mean that the state government is not treating the blast victims from Kerala in a proper way? ‘' asked a key IAS official.

Riasuddin said that he did not want to comment on the matter due to the code of conduct which binds Kerala government officials.

Though most states have expressed solidarity with Mumbaikars, only the government of Goa has donated Rs one crore to the chief minister's relief fund. "We liked the initiative by the Goa government. Goans are kind-hearted people and stood by Maharashtra in the time of need,"said an official in the chief minister's office.

Meanwhile, the government of Gujarat has asked the state relief and rehabilitation department for the list of dead and injured. "A Gujarat government official was making inquiries and hinted that they wanted to help the scores of Gujarati families which had lost their near and dear ones in Tuesday's blasts,"said the official.
