Let me make it abundantly clear that: at no point in time, have I indicated
(or so implied) that *all* journalists in Goa practice *bad* journalism.
There are always a few *sterling journalists* who deserve to be recognized
as true heroes with impeccable journalistic careers.
BTW: Fred conveniently avoided my pointed questions in my previous post.
That would have cleared up the ambiguity and nuances of crises and
issues that Fred alludes to but so conveniently eludes to explain.

[FN] * There's no way you could be reading the most influential segments of
the media in Goa (the Marathi/Devanagari Konkani press,
[JV] Is there need to read all and various versions of Marathi/Devanagari
Konkani media in Goa, which you say are the most influential segments?
What are the English news publishers doing then, are they shying away from
being in the leagues of their Marathi/Devenagari counterparts?
[FN] It was officially stated in the assembly that payments were being made
by the government for coverage by some of these networks! Have you factored
this into
your critique? Are you aware of these issues at all? Or are you just
jumping to conclusions?
[JV] The question is not whether the Goanet Reader has critiqued it, the
more potent question is whether the Press/Journalist has rigorously surfaced
such issues to increase awareness or capture public attention, if so, to
what extent and how often?
Critical conclusions are derived based on what is perceived from media
reporting;it is the journalist/press responsibility to collect, analyze,
verify and present information on events, trends, issues etc, without
violating the ethics and principles of journalism.
FN* There have been some interesting, if yet-to-scale-up experiments, in
building alternate media for Goa. You're reading one of them (Goanet).
Have you bothered to spare a thought to help build such ventures, or
appreciate their worth? Instead of cursing the darkness from
half-a-planet away, can you do something to change the situation?
Fred, you know (as well as I and many others do) that since Goanets
inception there have been at least three (3), well-known breakaway
fractions (groups) perhaps more on closer scrutiny. For various reasons
these individuals have detached from Goanet and established themselves only
to attracted more like-minded members from Goanet.
I wonder if we could move the world off its axis, say if we were to initiate
another group/fraction/venture? If that is the case, it takes just about
15-20 minutes to configure a groups-site like the Yahoo Groups and invite
members.
As for the appreciation for peoples contribution to Goanet, I urge you to
view the archives where you will find my profuse appreciations. Finally,
isnt it enough that I take the time of my busy schedule, to write Goanet,
rather than being a *silent* curser of darkness? Goanet membership is a
10,000+ strong, so we are told; pray tell us what happened to the 99%, when
we find only about 1% active members on Goanet?
[FN] For instance, I had to send out about 600 personal emails
and counter Western misconceptions about Goa (and India)
[JV] Would it be improper to say, that its more *important* to combat the
ills that befall us in Goa, and first change Goas image at the home-base
before venturing as far as half-a-planet away to change the Western
perceptions of Goa?
Does Goa really need to heavily rely on the West for its support (tourism
etc)? Can we for example have some statistical data on how much our Gulf
Goans and shippies/ seafarers have contributed to boost Goas economy to its
current levels, vs revenues generated from the western (excluding domestic)
tourists?
[FN] Can I argue, "Joe, finally you have conceded that there is pollution
in your part of North America. I am positive you know that, and there is no
point in denying it."
[JV] Why is FN so obsessed with North America and the West -- that he
makes it (west) a focal point of spectacular attraction like the Dhud
Sagar falls (in Goa) which, one seemingly endlessly sees
while traveling
the curved track in a locomotive. :-)
Best wishes,
Joe Vaz
