The Ribandar Citizens Action Committee has today dared
Urban Development Minister Mr. Joaquim Alemao to go
ahead with the setting up of a garbage treatment plant
at Bainguinim.
Strongly condemning Mr. Joaquim Alemao, the Committee
has wondered as to how Mr. Alemao could have the
acumen and competence to resolve Goas Garbage crisis
when Mr. Alemao had miserably failed to address the
garbage issue of his own Cuncolim constituency.
Warning Mr. Alemao to stop lecturing and planning to
educate people of Ribandar and its neighbourhood on
the garbage issue, the committee has challenged Mr.
Alemao to try the experiment of a garbage treatment
plant by identifying a site in his own Cuncolim
constituency or better still in his backyard at Varca.
The committee has reminded Mr. Alemao that a
senior Minister of the Goa Government had openly
divulged to a delegation of the Ribandar Citizens
Action Committee that the Bainguinim site was mooted
in view of a huge financial stake by way of kickbacks
in mind.
The committee has further stated that the people of
Ribandar and the residents of neighbouring Old Goa,
Chimbel, Merces and St. Cruz had opposed the garbage
plant at Bainguinim for very valid reasons and that
even Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane on his visit to
Bainguinim on 8th July had expressed his displeasure
at Bainguinim being identified as the site and had
suggested that an alternate site be explored to house
a garbage treatment plant.
The Committee has also stated that Deputy Chief
Minister Dr. Wilfred DSouza and the MLAs of Panaji,
St. Cruz, Taleigao and Cumbarjua had expressed
solidarity with the local people in opposing a garbage
treatment plant in a settlement zone and in the
vicinity of an area of historical and heritage
importance.
