When Chief Secretary J P Singh and other officials visited the Selaulim Dam on Saturday, PWD Chief Engineer Vachasunder admitted that ore rejects from the mining pits in the vicinity of the Selaulim Reservoir has been flowing into the Selaulim dam. Justifying the need for excess use of chlorine particularly during monsoons, Vachasunder stated that during monsoons, large quantity of manganese ore was flowing into the Selaulim Reservoir, which was finally entering into the Water Treatment Plant. "To do away with the iron ore particles we have to use excess chlorine," said Vachasunder. He added that during the monsoon, when iron ore and manganese particles enter into the Water Treatment Plant, water needs to be filtered twice to clear it from manganese and iron ore particles. "Due to entry of iron ore and manganese particles, filters get choked and get damaged very frequently,' said Vachasunder. To a query from the chief secretary's wife whether the excessive use of chlorine to treat water could be harmful to health, Vachasunder replied in the negative. Reassuring that consumption of water mixed with excess chlorine posed no threat, he added that chlorine gets evaporated in a minutes time if water is kept open in a glass before drinking. ----------------------------- HERALD 30/07/06 page 1 ----------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK ----------------------------------------------------------- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa ----------------------------------------------------------- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ---------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ Goanet mailing list [email protected] http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
