Dear Elisabeth:
I will try to respond to your post as systematically
and to the point as I can. I return may I expect that
you do the same?

EC: Can you verify with utmost certainty that no
infrastructural development has taken place in the US,
on account of retailers?

Me: No, in my opinion in such issues nothing can be
ever said with "utmost uncertainity" Walmart and other
mega corporations have indeed developed acres of
asphlat coated shopping malls by destroying
prairies, open wilderness and wetlands. In fact the
assertions you make about harlem being "completely"
re-energised , "most working class americans welcoming
walmart" , "mandos being third rate" are these made
with utmost certainity?
As i pointed out allmost 275 communities across US
have successfuly stopped walmart from "renergising"
and "putting life" into their neighborhoods. Not
exactly a sign of welcoming isn't it??
Zogby conducted a poll for a union-led group called
WakeUpWalMart, asked 1,012 people across the US about
their attitudes to Wal-Mart. Of the respondents, 59%
said they agreed with the statement that "Wal-Mart is
bad for America".

Your following statement is a good example :
"Two years ago there was nothing but prairie. Today,
it is a labyrinth of carefully laid out roads and
shops, all undertaken by the retail sector."

ME: Please visit the downtown of your area and see if
there are any empty malls or empty reail stores. If
walmarts and other mega corporations history is any
indication probably Walmart will leave that area and
destroy another prarie somewhere else, and maybe bring
"life" into a community. The impact of a walmart or any
other mega corporation on local businesses is
devastating. Probably you have not given thought to
that side of the story that for every school drop out
making a barely minimum wage in any of the big
retailer shops there are families who have been ruined
economically.

EC : "Do you know that partnership loans and subsidies
are routinely doled out to retailers actively engaged
in developing the community?"

ME: Who gives out these subsidies? In fact by
colluding with the government and making the tas payer
pay for a large part of their own obligations to their
employees large retailers have developed their own
bank balance. Do you believe that forcing people into
near minimum wage jobs without access to good quality
health care, destroying natural environment to develop
huge retail malls, driving out local Mom and Pop
enterprises out of business and contributing to a host
of other problems due to what is called "urban sprawl"
is "developing the comunity"?

You said : "Afterall, it was you who told us that
Goans in Goa know what's best for them."
Dont put words into other peoples mouth. I am begining
to believe that you have a habit of doing so. You
called me arrogant insular and myopic for merely
seconding cecils viewpont, a viewpoint shared by
Sunith and at least one other poster. Your post seems
to suggest that I am opposed to NRIs or NRGs giving
advice. I never said anything to that effect, I merely
expressed my disagreement with some of your views, a
position I still hold. I never called walmart and
other retailers evil, i merely pointed out that their
business practices are detrimental to local
businesses, local ecology as well as local culture. Be
it immigration law, labor rights, equal oportunity to
minorities as well as women walmart has been
frequently on the wrong side of law as well as public
opinion.

Please let me clearly state that I am merely pointing
out the "idealism" in your statements regarding the
conduct of behemoth retailers like walmart and others
and their impact o the small towns in US.
Please respond to specfic facts if you please.

-vivek
