Vasku, Vasco, Bhoyas, Saptak & Jelebies
One time, 1970s, Vasku (Vasco) was very famous for freshly churned Lassie, 'dud pedas' and 'Mitai', 'Bhelpuri' etc from the hands of UP Bhaiyas (Bhoyas). Migrants workers were usually seen only in Vasco. Perhaps, it was due to the last Railway Station (terminating point) of all South-Central trains (Bombay- Miraj-Londa-Vasco etc etc) Stn.Vasco da Gama (Sambhaji Nagar). Other reason could be, at the time of construction of the large scale Industry, Zuari Agro Chemicals Pvt. Ltd where many migrants may have come to work there. There were two Goan boys who used to come to our school from Vasco and because they were from Vasco, we often called them Vasku Bhoya. If a girl from our village marries to any Vascoites, we said she married to Vasku bhoya their children born were also called as bhoyas. During those days, we never missed Vasco Saptak, we always went there during the night ( and again during the day as the fair last 7-10days). Used to arrange special bus at night (all Christians men , women & children) and come back by 7am next day. During the night all streets were crowed with all sorts of people from all over Goa. Some even came there for pick-pocketing Some come there for stealing other items from the fair stalls. Most of us went there for fun and very few of us (not me ?) just to dodge with young girls (in the crowd). Endless queues were seen to worship Lord Damodar, see pic, we too were in the queque to see the God and offcourse, for the free Prasad sweet mixture of Coconut and Jaggary. Another specialty of the Vasco Saptak is freshly squeezed jelebies or Jelobis. There were many stalls making jelibies on site with plenty of sitting arrangement for the customers. Jelebies there were fresh, hot and cheap, see pics Today, I visited Vasco, and had an opportunity to visit the temple, ate jelebies too. All these things brought back my memories and the same I am sharing with you here.
