Tony, You are turning out to be a real treasure trove of info on the history of Goans in Tanzania. I remember going with my parents in the 1960's to visit the Demello Brothers at their building in Dar-es-salaam. Since it was their practise night, one of them carried me to their room so that I could watch them practise. I believe that was the first time I decided to be in a band. The Demello Brothers had the best band in town when Goan bands dominated the music scene. Remy led his band which played at the (old) New Africa Hotel. A few of us used to run away from the D.I. on Sunday nights, while our parents were playing tambola, and go over to the hotel were the band played in the open air. If I am not mistaken, George D'souza used to play for them too at that time. For those who are not aware of it, George D'souza went on to have his own 30 minute show on Radio Tanzania on Saturday evenings. He then played at Toronto's premier hotel for about 20 years. Returning to Remy, you are absolutely right about his Louis Amstrong songs. He did such a good rendition that people had goose bumps whenever he played and sang Louie. I know for sure that he was the inspiration for many a Goan musician in that era. Mervyn3.0 PS. Remy's youngest brother, Francis, who is based in Toronto plays both the piano and drums and has a one man band. Last year he performed at the Viva Goa. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
