Hi, Banking has certainly come of age in India, but as per the mails we read, the service is provided is not up to the standard unless one does know someone at the bank, or one opens his/her account in the Village. With the free hand given to private banks by the government and also international banks, there is a big scope for better service oriented banks, but the catch is the deposites. Some years ago, when I did check, CityBank required 25000 as its permanent balance account, ANZ Grindleys required 5000 and Hongkong Bank required 10000. This I believe is almost 7-8 years ago. I have no idea about it now. No wonder they give all the services available, when our Nationalized banks you can have even 100 rupees. But still I feel the Nationalized banks are risk free place to keep the money. Even our private banks namely the cooperative banks are risky, like the last time I heard of Mapuca Urban Cooperative bank. There was also an incident of one International bank few years back, I believe its BCCI having their office in Mumbai, belonging to a Pakistani.
Also As another person mentioned, best is to open the accounts in Village banks, where you get the best service, and you are on friendly terms with the Bank Manager, who can guide you in the banking procedures. If not have someone who is either a good friend, or relative, in the bank who can do the work for you whilst you go to the caffetaria to have a cup to tea with nice ussal baji or sip some beer. We are free to choose our banks. If one does not like the service of a particular bank you can open in another good bank. I have accounts in nationalised as well as private banks. With competition on the rise, their services are far more better than what it was 10 years back. so not to worry to take advantage of modern banking facilities and one will find banking a lot more easier and convienent. 17000 crore of Goan money in banks, than they should treat us like kings !!! after all CUSTOMR IS STILL THE KING kind regards R.
