TIATRO “GHOR BHANDLEM GHORABO MODDLO”

As announced earlier, Kuwait Goan Association has successfully staged its Tiatro “Ghor Bhandlem Ghorabo Ghoddlo” written and directed by the well known playwright and songster Rosary Ferns. Contrary to 3.30, this Tiatro was started at 4.05 p.m. and was very well attended by the audience; in fact rarely so many people attended a Tiatro in such a big number. Very many amongst the audience were even seen standing. The story of the Tiatro is based on the family life of a couple. Husband working in Kuwait and wife is kept in Goa, husband interest revolves around making money and more money while wife is neglected in Goa without husband‘s love and closeness. While wife in Goa craves for husband’s love to have a child and establish a home, husband on the other hand is interested in building a big palatial house. Finally wife gets fed up of husband’s lingering in Kuwait for a long time in devotion to money making and falls in love with a friend of her husband and ultimately divorces her husband. There is lot of lesson for Gulfies to learn from this Tiatro. It was a living example of Gulf incidents.

The artistes who played very good roles in this Tiatro were Ophelia doing the role of a mother, Sylverster Vas of a Kuwaitkar, Antonette de Calangute as his wife and Xavier Furtado as her paramour and of course Babli as daughter of Ophelia and Simon Gonsalves as her husband. Margareth D’Cruz and Clara Rod though both being recent inductions onto the big Konkani Stage yet both of them have grown into maturity especially the former who performed her role as a social worker very well. Querobina Carvalho’s role as nun from Mother Theresa’s mission was well appreciated. In comedy roles, visiting comedian John D’Silva produced peals of laughter in the hall by doing hilarious comedy along with local comedian Philip. The way people were laughing in the hall one could easily deduce that John D’Silva’s comedy was well appreciated by the audience as never before in any of the earlier Tiatros of Rosary Ferns. His comedy audience found fresh and not repeated from the last show in Kuwait. His one comedy on recital of small and big ABC instantly became talk of the town. He was well supported in his performance by the local comedian Philip. As a matter of information John D’Silva was one of the Goa based Tiatrists who went to Herald Office sometime back in Panaji to lodge a protest against my article “Rostad Tiatrist” along with Prince Jacob and others to teach me a good lesson. Unfortunately, none of them could create any effect on me. On the contrary some of them came to me shamelessly for their own promotion.

In the side show songs William de Curtorim as usual stole the show in his political songs and this was evidenced from the encore he received. Nobody amongst the singers got such a warm applauding as he did and that shows how much his songs are liked by the overwhelming majority of the audience. His political songs were bold and dashing, in one of his solos he called the politician as Chor, Churchill receiving bribes as MP, Luizin another “Chor” depositing his ill-gotten money in Swiss Bank and so many other things. He even called them as “Ran Dukor”. Listening to these statements one of the Navelkars in Kuwait vowed to detain William in Kuwait as if he is the representative of Interior Ministry and accused the organizers of allowing William to sing song against Luizin. When William got this news, William vowed to disgrace this Kuwait Navelkar in one of his songs in Goa, part of the song he has already composed as per the information, where he states “Navelkarani, samballat tumchea Kuwaitchea Kolvontak” All the three solos of William were fabulously applauded by the audience. William also fired a salvo against a tiatrist who created a discord amongst tiatrists in Kuwait by using the commandment “To aslear aum nachona”. According to few William is a controversial singer but according to overwhelming majority he is very much in demand in Kuwait and that he is in demand in Kuwait was testified by the encore he received. The other songs which were well received by the audience were the duets of Sanny de Quepem & Antonette de Calangute and Rosary Ferns & Babli. Both the solos smartly rendered by Babli were well received by the audience. Osvi Viegas rendered 2 solos and one duet with Antonette. Besides, Marcus Vas and his trio with Sylvester and Laurente, John D’Silva and Bab Agnelo also rendered their songs.

Writer and director of this Tiatro Rosary Ferns when he introduced Ophelia to the audience there was nothing but tremendous applauding in the hall, nothing but tears in the eyes of Ophelia, also leading tears into the eyes of many amongst the audience. The 50 seconds standing ovation Ophelia got from the audience was unique in the history of Tiatro in Kuwait. Seeing this sort of adoration for herself Ophelia did nothing but sobbed and sobbed continuously uttering her statement again and again as “Argam Devak – Argam Jesuk”. She could not imagine such a mighty welcome was in store for her in Kuwait amongst the Goans and Konkani people. She was overwhelmed by the tremendous love and affection showered on her by the Kuwait Goans for which she expressed her thanks to God and to everyone. It was a rare occasion to see Ophelia crying so uncontrollably, a queen of Konkani stage of yesteryears who decorated Konkani Stage for over 4 decades and still going strong in her acting at this ripe age.

Because of the wide coverage visiting tiatrists get in the media some of the local tiatrists showed their dissatisfaction. One must be bold enough to admit the fact that it is the visiting tiatrists who brighten the image of the tiatro staged in Kuwait by the local tiatrists and because of this visiting tiatrists are encouraged more. They are a good marketable commodity, for this reason their photos and names are highlighted in bold capital letters in the local media. I doubt without visiting Tiatrist locals can achieve any major success in Kuwait.

According to the organizers, they were very happy with all the visiting artistes because none of them gave any inconvenience to the organizers namely none of the visiting artistes left for Airport soon after the Tiatro by hurriedly doing his/her part; all left for home after 2 – 3 days. None of the artistes put the organizers into unnecessary expenditure. All the visiting artistes remained disciplined and not the way some of the others have done earlier with an attitude “mellta taka kator – ani apleachem sadoi”

Musical score for this Tiatro was provided by Dennis and his group and first time in Kuwait since his arrival a few months back, the son of Konkani novelist Bonaventure De Pietro, Rabindra Pietro played an organ for this Tiatro and excelled well. He is a good solfist unlike many others in Kuwait.

One nuisance very many in the audience could not accept was the tardy and delayfull programme conducted during the interval. This type of time consuming programme including Housie Game should be reduced not to make the audience boring. Audience come to see Tiatro and nothing else.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
