Help others be BETTER INFORMED, The time is come for the people of Goa to ORGANISE not AGONISE !! ----------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- GOACAN stops sale of fake Roti Maker at Pretty Home Exhibition -------------------------------------------------------------------- GOACAN activists managed to put a stop to the sale of fake electrical appliances called "Roti Maker" from being sold to consumers at the Pretty Home Exhibition held at the BPS Club grounds on Independence Day 15th August. by confronting the sales persons of Sunrise Associates from Chennai.
The GOACAN activists on a tip off from the Vasco Civic and Consumer Forum visited the Pretty Home exhibition and found that sales persons were busy collecting Rs.100 as advance amount and then Rs. 1,500 as a balance amount on issuing an Order Form instead of a Cash Memo. They further noticed that the electrical appliance styled as "National Chapati Maker" was being sold in boxes having a printed price of Rs. 2,250 showing the manufacturer as "NATIONAL ELECTRIC co (INDIA) with address at Ghatkoper, Mumbai. However, the box did not have the month and year of manufacture. On noticing this discrepancy, the GOACAN activists immediately requested the assistance of officers of the Legal Metrology Dept. and Margao Town Police. It may be noted that the Vasco Civic and Consumer Forum Convenor Mr. Higino Rebelo had received a complaint from Mr. G.V. Bhavane a consumer from Vasco who was cheated on an earlier occasion when the electrical appliance Chapati Maker was sold at an exhibition at Vasco. As the appliance stopped functioning in a couple of weeks, he went in search of the sellers at Mala, Panaji to find that no such business premises existed in Mala and the calls to the mobile No. provided also drew a blank. He subsequently wrote to Sunrise Associates at their Chennai address only to be shocked to find the letter returned by the postal authorities stating that no such business venture with the address existed in Chennai. Legal Metrology Inspector Arun Panchwadkar seized fourteen packages by doing the necessary seizure report. The activists also found that the salespersons of Sunrise Associates did not possess any cash memo's nor had any registration with Department of Commercial Taxes wherein VAT collection would be required and some Order Form showed a local contact address as Sunrise Associates, Mala, Panaji. While the slogan shouting GOACAN activists confronted the organisers of the Pretty Home Exhibition, Mr. S.S. Phalker and Mr. Kankoankar as to how such fake items were being sold without proper bill / cash memo and why the authenticity of the sellers was not verified, a number of consumers came on the spot and complained about the electrical appliance being defective and demanded the refund of their money. GOACAN volunteer Rony Dias in a written complaint to the Margao Town Police Station Inspector has requested a full scale investigation into the fraudulent sale of defective electrical appliances with a view to cheat the consumers in Goa of their hard earned money and endangering their lives. Copies of the complaint have been sent to Controller Legal Metrology, Asst. Director, Department of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Commisioner of Commercial Taxes, Directorate of Public Grievances and Executive Engineer, Electricity Dept. Margao. Later acting on the GOACAN complaint Legal Metrology Dept. officials inspected the room of the sales person Selvaraj G. at Milan Lodge near station road, Margao and seized another 18 boxes of these Roti Maker today morning. While PSI Navlesh Desai of Margao Town Police Station has already begun investigations, the Vasco Police have also started further investigations on the earlier complaint of cheating lodged by Mr Bhavane.
