Dear Ms Jeevan Rane, At the outset, let me thank you for responding to my write-up. It does not matter if the same has raised your hackles. I consider your response as a most genuine response of a lover of a language and who felt insulted, nay threatened to read what I had to say about our Chief Minister Mr. Pratapsing Raoji Rane vis a vis his delivery of the Independence day speech in Marathi. Believe you me, I have no quarrel with you on this account but on the contrary agree with you absolutely and entirely when you say that Marathi language is not an alien language in Goa. I myself, being a lover of languages (speaking and understanding (somewhat) many foreign languages such as Potuguese Spanish, Italian and even Greek, not because I had a special interest in these but because of my exposure to them for professional reasons. At home, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and even Gujarati for the same reasons of exposure. But being a bonafide Goan, my mother tongue is KONKANI. Now therefore, just because I am a Konkaniwadi, should I hate all these other languages?? Naaahh ! Now coming back to the Chief Minister's speech in Marathi, my protests, as a bonafide Goan are on record because KONKANI is the Official Language of Goa ( As per the Language Act in existance). As an elected representative of Goa, Rane is duty bound to speak in the language of the land at Official Functions., repeat Official Functions. That he is a lover of Marathi like many of the names that you have mentioned has nothing to do with this argument here. For all I care, Rane can speak, sing, dance, drink, eat and even sleep in Marathi for reasons I have labled him as the MERGERIST NUMBER ONE. But whether you, or persons like you, who do not know the meaning of the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE like it or not, Goa's Chief Minister will not speak in MARATHI at OFFICIAL functions. He may, however, speak in HINDI or in ENGLISH, depending on the occasion and the congregation, Hindi being our NATIONAL LANGUAGE and English being our ADMINISTRATIVE language. Be warned, Ms. Jeevan Raneji, that should something like this be repeated, there will be rotten eggs flying on Rane's or whoever's head who delivers his Official Function speech in MARATHI in any Official function in GOA. Believe you me, personally, I have nothing against MARATHI as a language nor do I have anything against any person or persons wanting to excel in MARATHI. I respect all languages and all peoples who use them. But for me Official Language will not be insulted the way Rane did at Patradevi on Inida's Independence day Celebrations. with kind regards floriano Pls Note: This is posted on www.goasu-raj.org (Comments on News Reports section) for the kind information of Goans in Goa and Goans world-wide. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jeevan To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, August 17, 2006 10:23 PM Subject: Floriano's Sunday Ramblings -15 [Towards Celebrating India's 59th. Ind Mr Floriano-Jee, Namaskar, Please remember that Marathi is not an alien in Goa. You must know that several goans, B B Borkar, S. Sardesai, SS DEsai, Mangeshkars, Surashree Kerkar, Mogubai Kurdikar, Kishori Amonkar, Mangeshkars, Ibrahim Afgan, Ashok Saraf, Master Dattaram, Sachin Pilgavkar, Varsha Usgavkar, Ajit Kadkade, and many many more, all from Goa have contributed to Marathi literature, music and drama. This includes, not just Hinuds, but also Christains and Muslims. If you are still ignorant about it then please find out! You go to Pernem, and you will find that the Christains and Muslims there can not only speak, read and write Marathi but sing MArathi Bhajans and Abhangs. Eg. Francis Rodriguese, from Torse, Pernem Goa. The beauty of any language is that it brings people together. Language spreads love and affection. I am not any waadi (such as Konkaniwaadi, Marathiwaadi, etc.) like you, but enjoy marathi, konkani, english, portuguese and all other languages. In principle, any language is such 'mahaan' (great) that making its fun is 'Ghatiyapan' (cheap) Please count the number of Marathi publications emanating from Goa to get an idea about the status, popularity and acceptibility of Marathi in Goa. Please dont model goa based on some village in South Goa. Understand the ground realities across the length and breadth of goa to get comprhensively an idea about the social chemistry of goa. BTW, is there any merger movement going on in Goa at the moment. Don't rake up past issues, there will be no end to it!! Wish good luck to you on your SOCIAL and POLITICAL fronts. Regards Ms. Jeevan Rane Now for the minor irritant. We have always known that Pratapsing Rane is a die-hard mergerist who loves Marathi and Maharashtra more than Konkani and Goa. While the speakers which included freedom fighters Shri. Vasant Mollio and Shri. Chandrakant Kenkre, both presidents of two rival factions of Goa' s freedom fighters, spoke in chaste Konkani, the Chief Minister of Goa, Mr. Pratapsing Raoji Rane preferred to deliver his Independent Day speech to the entirely Goan audience at Patra Devi in chaste Marathi. This is when, one minute after the CM embarked on his speech, saw me, Dr. Dumo and the rest of the GSRP team (sitting in the 5th row) leave the scene, showing our backs to Rane on our way out, mingled with mutters of 'You are Goa's CM. Speak to us Konkani for God's sake". Rane couldn't have spoken for long, for his official car passed our van within 500 meters from the venue, barely a few minutes after we left the scene in protest. _______________________________________________ Goanet mailing list [email protected] http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
