FELICITATION FOR OPHELIA IN KUWAIT.
On 12th of this month Goan Stage artiste Ophelia was honoured in Kuwait
under the auspices of Konkani Heritage Kuwait. The felicitation was held at
Village Inn, in Kuwait City and was well attended by her lovers and
admirers, including all the visiting artistes namely William de Curtorim,
John DSilva, Osvi Viegas, Babli and Antonette de Calangute. One of the
surprise attendees was Ophelias Stage colleague and renowned artiste of
yesteryears H. Briton who is currently in Kuwait visiting his children. The
felicitation function started with the offering of Flower bouquet to Ophelia
by the young girl Caren who is the daughter of Fidelis Fernandes. Then the
proceedings started with the opening speech by Fidelis Fernandes welcoming
Ophelia, Chief Guest Salvador Dias visiting artistes and all the attendees.
The proceedings of the function consisted of speeches, songs by the
Tiatrists, a Mando and a Poetry recital. H. Briton in his speech
highlighted his close association with Ophelia on Konkani Stage for many
years in many of the Tiatros in Goa and Bombay and admired Ophelia for her
natural acting. Rosary Ferns in his speech highlighted Ophelias
contribution in the promotion of Konkani Stage during the last so many
years. John DSilva, Osvi and William de Curtorim also praised Ophelia for
her yeomen services for Konkani Stage. They also appreciated Konkani
Heritage Kuwait for organizing such felicitations and giving due recognition
to the Konkani Stage artistes. Ophelia in her speech of course tears
rolling down her cheeks thanked KHK and all her well wishers for remembering
her contribution to Konkani Stage. She even went a step further and said
that what Goa Government could not do for her in Goa finally Kuwait Goans
under KHK has done, of course under thunderous applauding by the attendees.
Then she concluded her speech by thanking everyone for showing his/her
affection to her. She said she was overwhelmed by the warm welcome she
received in Kuwait from each and everyone. Ophelias daughter Babli in her
extempore speech surprised everyone by disclosing her intelligence of
speaking on the subject at the spur of the moment on the greatness of her
mother as an artiste. To further support her speech she even sang a verse
and a chorus of a song of yesteryears highlighting the importance of her
mother and late father Bab Peter. Being a Bombayite her Konkani is very
neat and fluent without any false pride of false accent normally existed in
the semi literate and intellectually bankrupt anglicized Goans. Salvador
Dias the president of Kuwait Goan Association as chief guest expressed his
feelings of yesteryears Ophelia whom he used to admire as a young boy.
Sanny de Quepem rendered his memorable solo Tiatro and Tiatrists while H.
Briton rendered his well acclaimed song Tujea Ghora Samkar Mojem Ghor and
William de Curtorim his latest solo Ran Dukor Goyche Montri and a Mando
with a Dulpod by Antonette de Calangute, Rosary Ferns, Sanny de Quepem and
Sylvester Vaz. Musical score was provided by Rabindra Pietro. A beautiful
poetry in praise of Ophelia was recited by Walley Quadros who is a renowned
Mangalorean Poet. A. Veronica Fernandes compeered the proceedings. The
commemorative Memento depicting a gold plated Dhow was presented to Ophelia
thru the hands of the president of Konkani Heritage Kuwait, Mr. Fidelis
Fernandes.
Before leaving for Bombay, Ophelia speaking to this writer and even phoning
from Bomaby after reaching home, expressed her total happiness and
satisfaction over what has been done for her in Kuwait by the Goan
community. She said she was overwhelmed by the warm welcome given to her.
She stressed more on the cooperation she received from all her artiste
colleagues, musicians, audience, Kuwait Goan Association, Konkani Heritage
Kuwait and all who came to see her acting in Tiatro Ghor Bhandlem Ghorabo
Moddlo. She regretted that she could not thank everyone individually. She
even said that she will keep everyone in her prayers.
