In order to accommodate the larger numbers attending this year, the event will be held at the Kingston City Hall , Moorabbin. Many Goans throughout the world will join Melbournians to commemorate this event which is earmarked to celebrate recognition of Konkani as their ‘mai bhas' [mother tongue]. On this day, Goans take pride in their culture and hospitality and in order to keep in line with the later, they invite their friends and mainstream Australians to share in the jubilant celebrations as was done in the last four years. The World Goa Day function is also a gathering to socialise, catch up with old friends and make new friends. It is a venue to taste Goan hospitality, share and witness a special culture, enjoy cuisine and listen to some nostalgic music. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi “No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive”. In the true spirit of multi-culturism, Goans take the opportunity to meet Australians of other cultures, and enjoy the diverse nature of different people. The evening featuring a dinner dance, will have ‘live music' by one of the well known local bands ‘Replay 6 with Sandra', besides a spectacular Goan folk dance, and a delicious buffet provided by Silver Platter, which will encompass some special Goan dishes including a wide variety of vegetarian items. There will be lots of surprises and prizes on the night. We are undoubtedly the smallest community of Goans overseas here in Queensland Australia with about 70 member families supporting us as members. I am the current president for the last few years and we have been supporting charities here in Queensland as well as overseas in the best way we could. Last year we helped 'Jan Ugahi' in Salcete as well as the Tsunami victims in Sri Lanka and this year we are helping 'Shanti Niwas' in Bardez. We have also helped the parish of north Queensland when it was hit by 'Cyclone Larry' These were done by conducting raffles at our dances. Kind regards Joy de Souza President 'Club de Goa' Brisbane. AUSTRALIA --------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------- GERMANY =========== FRANKFURT --The Goan Association Germany --------------- ----------------------------- Dear Oscar, The Goan Association Germany is happy to know thru Rene Barreto and Basilio Magno that you have establishing an Alliance of World Goan Associations. It certainly is a great idea and we would be happy if you would please enlist our association with the Alliance . We are perhaps the smallest Goan community in the west, numbering around 2,500 spread throughout Germany . The Goan association here originally was a brainchild of Basilio Magno in the early sixty's, when the first group of Goans landed in Germany with working contract signed by the Portuguese Government. The larger number of Goans here are those who came directly from Goa/Bombay with smaller pockets of those who came from East Africa & Karachi . The Goan Association Germany, is located in Frankfurt and is an officially registered body since 2003. Our annual programs include: Goa Nite Ball, Annual Family Picnic, Xâmas Celebration and from last summer we celebrate WORLD GOA DAY Our this yearâs highlight will be Goa Day celebration that falls on 22 July 2006 with a Tiatr group from Goa with courtesy by the Konkani Dramatic Association London. We would like to thanks you and Rene for all your time and efforts for trying to unite Goan community worldwide. On World Goa Day last year I stressed the impact that overseas Goans can have on Goa today. With Indian laws changing and persons of Indian origin being given more rights, it is important that all people of Goan origin and residence realise that events in Goa are a part of their history, culture and human rights. Towards this end, and considering the million Goans in the diaspora, I completely support the interests of Goans worldwide. We can attain much from this forum and we need to meet to initiate a plan of action. It goes without saying that it was only after your persistent efforts that this came about. This is a very important day for Goans for it gives them an opportunity to reflect on this day on who they are, their great cultural and historic heritage and to teach and pass on to the next generation the great Goan traditions orally. Furthermore, the Day also affords an opportunity to Goans outside Goa to gather and come together to exchange views, news and to partake of Goan delicacies which are made on such special occasions. Your idea of an Alliance of World Goan Organisations is long overdue and will go a long way to unite and gather the Goans on one platform. Margao-Net fully supports your efforts and will fully cyber-support you to achieve this goal. You may add Margao-Net as one of the first members of the Alliance of World Goan Organisations (AWGO). An event was organised in London-UK and in Mhapsa-Goa in the very first year on 20 August, 2000. I am happy to have been associated with the event to mark the day in Goa. I have before me the The Constitution[Seventy-first Amendment ] Act,1992 whereby Konkani was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution on 20 August, 1992 during the tenure of S.B.Chavan as the Home Minister. The operative words are simple " the existing entry 7 shall be re-numbered as entry 8 and before the entry 8 as so re-numbered, the entry "7.Konkani." shall be inserted." [see http://www.constitution.org/cons/india/tamnd71.htm ] Few words; momentous achievement! You have chosen your World Goa Day well. Konkani is the world for Goa. World Goa Day brings people of Goan origin and of the Konkan region together and strengthens the bonds of friendship and kindred spirit. An 80 year old relative of mine helped lead the event in Houston-USA in 2004. It brought people together. Young Constatino was about a quarter of that age when he led the WGD in Lisbon. Another huge success. The same is the case all over the world. The more we are together, the happier we will be.Together Everyone Achieves More. An enlightened man once said,"Things that make us happy, make us wise." Long live Goa Day. Simple events; great impacts. Miguel Braganza Facilitator in all things Goan. By now this annual event has been firmly planted in the socio-cultural agenda of every Goan institution, and I may say, the World Goa Day has come to stay in the hearts and minds of every Goan, just like the feast of St. Francis Xavier. It is quite an achievement for Rene, who slogged much at the computer and telephone to get to every Goan his message successfully. It is very gratifying to see the spirit of collaboration shown by the leaders of Goan social institutions the world over, rallying to Rene's socio-patriotic call for Goan identity and unity, and taking pride in its annual celebration, that has been growing year by year in quantity of participants and quality in presentation. We are all in forCongratulations, particularly Rene and his collaborators -the Managing Committees of Goan Associations in their respected adop-ted country. The Movement has spread like wild fire thanks to the collaboration of the internet- media like: Goanet, Goa-Goans, Gulf-Goans, CGN, etc. The theme-song also went round the world for downloading, thanks to goa-world website by Gaspar and Ulysses. Rene is also thankful to Goasudha-rop for sponsoring goaday website through its office bearer George Pinto, which serves to radiate all WGD activities. The song is also hosted, since last year, on website Goaday-Goamog.com in Portugal run by Leao Fernandes. It is very heartening to know that some Associations, not content just to celebrate the Day with Dinner and Dance (an easy way out), have gone all out to create a really cultural evening, with members pre-paring some skits, short plays, sing-song, etc. promoting thereby young and old talent in their community. An example of that I found in one of the printed WGD program- me I received from Goinkars Own Academy in Karachi. Its president Deborah Santa-maria is a composer in her own right and a singer too. She has composed all the songs, except two. Here's their programme: Introduction by Deborah Santamaria. Welcome speech by Valentine Gonsalves. Items: 1). Opening Dance, 2). Solo: Bur- geank Xikoiat Konkani, 3). Duet: Oh Fran- cis, 4). Solo: Golden Goa, 5). Trio: Goenkar's Own Academy, 6). Solo: My Name is Clifford Fernandes, INTERVAL. 7). Duet: Shinthu ani Vittu, 8). Solo: Amerikak Attak Zalo, 9). Trio: Vhoddlo Saib, 10). A Special Dance, 11). Duet: Jimmy, Jimmy, 12). Solo: Proud to be a Goan. 13). Distribution of gifts, 14). Dinner. World Goa Day must also serve to remind us that we have one native identity: the Konkani language. The Goa Day was kept on 20 August to commemorate the Anniver- sary of the inclusion of Konkani Language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitu- tion. The older generation like me surely must know to speak in the Mother-tongue. As pensioners, these elderly gentlemen, or ladies for that matter, could help to incul- cate Konkani in the younger generation by offering them FREE Konkani classes. We hear so much of "Giving back to Goa". This is one chance to Give back to Goa by sacri- ficing some time to teach Konkani to young Goans abroad, so that they could pride themselves in their Goanity. There is a very simplistic book to learn Konkani. It teaches Konkani in Roman script, Devnagari script, and Kanada script. Its name is: Sarki Amchi Bhas Sompi, and is available at Singbal's Book House, Church Square, Panjim, for the pittance of Rs.125/-. I wish you all a Very Happy World Goa Day 2006, and leave you with my Goan Credo: I'm first a Goan, And that I'll for ever be; And never forget that, My Moher-tongue is Konkani. or in Konkani: Konknni uloi, Konknni boroi, Khoro Goencho put mhunn dakoi. In Karachi, Pakistan the Goinkars Own Academy will be celebrating World Goa Day in October 2006. A fun filled two day event. The Goinkars Own Academy strives to get our community together through the various events it arranges for the young and the old. We plan on commencing basic Konkani classes for the children in the near future, interests for which unfortunately had diminished over the years amongst the younger generations. However, over the past several years the Goinkars Own Academy's cultural, religious and other events in the Konkani language, has instilled a strong desire and keen interest in parents and children to learn our Mother Tongue KONKANI and take part in plays, dances and songs. Rene Barreto should be commended for keeping this torch burning since 2000 with a handful of coordinators. Today, he must be very proud that his efforts have borne fruit amongst the Goan communities far and wide as each year they celebrate World Goa Day with the traditional Goan culture i.e. delicious food, sweets, spices and a variety of musical skits and variety programs. I also know that we Goans are an adaptable lot and have made a home for ourselves in every corner of the world and adapted to the customs and cultures of our chosen new "homeland". The Goan Association of New Jersey joins in Wishing You ALL A Very Happy and Joyful " World Goa Day " On this, day it is appropriate to reminisce Golden Memories of our Experiences with our Motherland-GOA. The very mention of the word brings Joy to our hearts and minds as most of us have Memorable Moments and Experiences of GOA. I look at my Dad who is now 85 and lives in Canada. The mention of GOA gives him the energy and resonance of a 16 year old; his thoughts of Goa are certainly that of the Portguese rule and the transition over to India. Our biggest blessings he recalls is that we are blessed to house the body of St. Francis Xavier so unique and divine. Our Association in New Jersey prides itself with activities far beyond parties, entertainment and merry making, not to undermine that we indulge in a lot of the above. More importantly as most of us in North America realize and are appreciative of the generosity the Lord has bestowed on us, we try to focus on helping the under priviliged here in the US and more so in GOA. We are involved with a lot of charities in Goa for the betterment of schools, libraries, education and the old and sick. Some of our Members are presently agressively pursuing the construction of a State of the Art Cardiac facility in GOA. Our prayers go out to them that this may come to fruition. Let us all collectively be proud of our heritage and pledge that we will continue to give to our Motherland, and work towards a more peaceful and harmonious future not only in the WORLD, but particularly in GOA where so much is changing as we forge into the 21st century. Goan associations operate in different parts of the world and all share a common desire to live and pass on some of our values and traditions to future generations . Our culture, like all cultures is subtle, it is under the surface, but it affects us all always. Some of us have been far removed from our motherland by generations of expatriate residence and our link to Goa is mainly through association events and the goans we meet. Therefore all associations wherever they are, fulfil a wonderful role. Our association has for the last few years celebrated World Goa day at it's annual picnic. This year the picnic will be on August 20th and is open to all goans and their friends. The style of this event has always been to bring a dish, preferably of goan origin, and share with one and all - a truly communal event. Sometimes, there is even the communal pigling to share. With unity we can soar like eagles, otherwise we will fly like barnyard hens. I salute you and all the other associations for their commitment to their members and this worthy ideal. We will organize a special sports event to commemorate the day. You always have our full support for the worthy cause and we all appreciate your kind efforts in bringing together all Goans without any distinction. Let us promote and keep alive our Goan heritage and especially our States official language -Konkani. Jerson Vaz Gen. Secretary United Goans Center K.S.A. 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 Mogall Goenkar bhav-bhoinnanim, August 20 is sixteen days away when we will be celebrating World Goa Day. This date also happens to be the 14th anniversary of the inclusion of our Konkani language in the VIII Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This is exactly why Miguel Braganza has suggested that it also be celebrated as the World Konkani Day. This message is to request Goans/Goan Associations all over the world to patronize Konkani by using it in connectio with the World Goa Day. From now on, I suggest that the subject line read as World Goa/Konkani Day (Sonvsari Goyem/Konknni Bhas Dis.) The translation of the title will not only lend solidarity but will also announce to the world that we are celebrating a Goan function. I also suggest that World Goa/Konkani Day functions end with the following slogan: Viva World Goa Day - Viva Konkani! Have a wonderful World Goa/Konkani Day 2006! Moi-mogan, Domnic Fernandes Anjuna/Dhahran, KSA ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------ TOGETHER WE HAVE MADE IT HAPPEN. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi This is certainly great work you guys are doing. It's made me feel real good to be a Goan and a part, insignificant though it may be, of this solidarity movement which I am sure will snowball over the years. Let me know if there's any where I can help. aughi dalton ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) ---------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- PLEASE do NOTIFY us of any errors , ommissions you may have noticed in our list of events or messages.
