We were driving on Highway 427 North today and I saw "Memme" on a sign board, So I asked my kids , "Hey you guys know what "memme" means in Konkani?", they said "No". So I said it means "fish". Then my daughter said : "I thought "Nishtem" was fish. I said "That's right, but 'memme means fish in kid's language". Then my son said "What's kid's language?'. I said "Arre, in Goa, in olden days you had to speak to kids in kids' Konkani language for them to understand. "Like you don't say "xit" for rice, you say "Coco". Remember in olden days, mothers used to scare the kids "Arre Monno etolo veguim jei" or "Baba tujeo uuo kaddtam na zalear mure teo Uoo tuka ubarun tea vodlea shetant uddoitolio:" and the kids would let their mother hurt their skull, ani "oooos" kon teo liko, uuo nakttam ghalun uuo martalim. "Baba tum mosteo konakam, tuk mure Dev hast laitolo, Choool kon kailim ghan Inferna ujea lashtolo" and we poor kids would believe our mothers ani amgue lissaum kotalei. Atanche bhurgue hem korpak assai? Tuvem tenkam hat lailear. "Mom I will call 911" mhun police-k apoupak assai. The kids have all their rights and mummy and daddy are having their fights.
********************************* Last week I went for my friend's barbecue party for his son's birthday party. His son Savio after working for IBM for 4 years is going back to school, as he is doing his Ph. D. in Engineering. So he had some colleagues from his U. of T. (University of Toronto) days. Most of his colleagues were a mixed ethnic crowd. So Savio started to introduce them to us: "Hi guys. This is Eric" I said "Eric? What's your last name?" ( I wanted to know "To Konnnalo?" as he was brown and first name being western) Eric said "Kader" We old Goans started laughing, when someone whispered "ericador-u?". Now you won't believe who was the next. Many of you know about that Hindi film producer "Subhash Ghai"(pronounced "ghei" in English) This guy comes up to me and says," I am Ajit Ghai" like "ajit ghe" and everyone of us old Goans start kakading (laughing) holding our stomachs.(first "ericador ani atam "ajit (enema) ghe?) So two more people are introduced and nothing happens. But then there is this white Italian girl who comes up and introduces herself, " Hi guys I am 'Marla Fusco' . So you guys know what happened then!(Kitem fusco marla? Konnem?) No more stomach holding. What a party! What a free entertainment. What they must be thinking of us? I kid you not. This all happened in Etobicoke, Toronto, not in EtobiPepsi or Mrs. Sauga! This old Goan Bardez lady said 'arre Shi Baba, kohlim pozzdim navam re hanchim?" Bye Cheers!
