Hi Dr. Cornel DaCosta, Dr. Avertano Noronha , a world famous neurologist (of Assolna/Bombay and now Chicago) and a prominent hockey goalkeeper during his medical college days in Punjab, organised a dinner with the great Goan track-star Lavy Pinto in Chicago recently, when I was there in mid June 2006. Octagenerian Lavy Pinto is in great spirits. Lavy Pinto (Ex-Morod Mapusa, Nairobi Kenya, and Bombay) won the gold medals in the 100m,200m sprints in the 1950 Asian Games and represented India in the 1952 Olympics. It was a memorable dinner as Lavy reminisced about his birthplace Nairobi, growing up in the South Bombay (Dhobitalao) area and his school and college days at St. Xavier's School and College, his athletic career, which won him the title of The Fastest Man in Asia" in 1950, his working career at Tatas and his stints at the Taj Mahal Hotel and Air India and his subsequent arrival in the US in 1969. Lavy is very proud of his five grown up children, many of whom live in the Chicago area.
Attached is our picture with the great Lavy Pinto. Others in the pic from L to R are myself, Dr. Avertano Noronha, Lavy Pinto and his son Lorne Pinto. BTW which part of Goa are you from ? Best Regards, Dr. Carmo D'Cruz Goan, ex Velim in South Goa, now Indian Harbour Beach, Florida (Dr. CARMO DCRUZ [EMAIL PROTECTED]) From http://www.goacom.com/joel/news/2006/june/22june06.htm Date: Sat, 19 Aug 2006 11:38:25 +0100 From: "cornel" Hi Goanetters I'd like to repeat an earlier request I made on Goanet some time ago. Does anyone know anything about the sprinter Levy Pinto, once reputed to be the fastest man in Asia? I believe he was located in Mumbai. I am just curious to know if there is anything on record or known about him. His name had come up often in early Goan papers in the sports sections. _______________________________________________ Goanet mailing list [email protected] http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
