The students who wore protective gloves, collected about one dozen large trash bags of mainly plastic, pet and glass bottles and large amounts of thermocol.
The programme which was organised by Coconut Grove Beach Retreat in association with Betalbatim Civic & Consumer Forum, saw a large number of hotel officers and staff enthusiastically joining in. Nixon Colaco Operations Manager, stated that Beach Cleaning would henceforth be an ongoing process for the Hotel. Later, Xavier Cota, Convenor of the Consumer Forum welcomed the gathering which also included teachers Lorraine Godinho, Alba Carvalho, Astrid Pereira and Coconut Grove General Manager Vikas Khokha.He introduced Mr. Clinton Vaz, Garbage Management Consultant to Panjim Municipal Corporation who in a presentation displayed to the students and the Hotel Staff how garbage, far from being a nuisance, can yield rich dividends in the form of compost and sale of recyclable plastics, bottles and metals. He said that segregation at source is the important first step.
