Dear Gilbert, Even though we do not share similar world-views, I have always respected your posts with courtesy, because I really do feel you are a benign gentleman of my father's era.
So it saddens me that you have chosen to distort the contents of my post. The reason for my post about my father's bigotry was not to malign my father but rather to speak with utmost honesty about the social ills of our society. For too long discussions about caste and communalism have taken place in the third person. How many times have we heard caste being discussed and yet always with the disclaimer that "the word was never uttered in our family". Well, if it was never uttered in any of our families then how come, it existed in its most virulent form for centuries and does even today? Who were these unknown families that were propagating it, under cover of anonymity? And the same goes for communalism and religious bigotry. If we are all blended in harmony how come there are crosses being vandalised in Goa? How come even fifty years after independence Goan Catholic functions don't include Hindus (especially in diaspora) and vice versa; how come the words "Konknako kazar zatta" are whispered about like a bad disease no one wants to contract rather than celebrated with pride? No Gilbert, the time has come for us to talk about these things with the utmost honesty. We must take ownership of these problems, we must assign blame where blame lies. We must speak of them in the first person. Only then, can we begin to address them.
